Patient-Centered, Insight Driven Health Tech & Patient Experience Strategist | Health Platform, Patient Data & Service Design SME
HIMSS #AI for Healthcare Forum?in Boston, Eve Cunningham MD MBA Chief of Virtual Care and Digital Health at Providence presented an impactful AI use case empowering PCPs for better care decisions. PROBLEM: PCPs pressured to address a patient’s health concerns in an average of 18 minutes with an average of 220,000 data points in the patient’s electronic medical record. And with over one in 3 patients referred to a specialist each year, PCPs are tasked with diagnosing the health issue and making decisions about the need for a specialist. PCPs struggle with massive amounts of clinical and patient data needed to make the best referral decisions. They need assistive technology to support this important care access process. AI SOLUTION MEDPEARL: Created through #HumanCenteredDesign approach, co-creating with 270 clinicians. MedPearl has “concise, human-authored algorithmic primary and subspecialty care next best actions on over 700 conditions”.? Clinicians utilize MedPearl’s AI algorithms to pull up and review essential clinical information alongside contextualized patient data to see next best actions with what has/hasn’t been done for the patient, empowering clinicians to optimize the “work up” while reducing redundant diagnostics. KEY BENEFITS: Clinical users report less time in the EMR, fewer hours outside work hours and more productivity. Comments from clinicians: "...making it easier to quickly access the most relevant information. Its streamlined format saves time and effort, ensuring health professionals can find information without being overwhelmed by unnecessary details”.? ".. uniformity of patient care path the best -practice level. This allows primary care physicians to provide more care value, improving diagnostic testing, treatment, and referrals and in opening more specialist access". *** Read my blog as I captured my discussions with Dr Cunningham about Providence's MedPearl development process, four key platform roadmap plans and roll out to other health systems https://bit.ly/3znvZVt #AIinHealthcare #PrimaryCare #ProviderExperience Sara Vaezy Christina Caraballo Robert Havasy Hal Wolf Zeev Neuwirth, MD

We are pleased to share that our case study "A Physician-Created Platform to Speed Clinical Decision-Making and Referral Workflow" was published in NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery! Just like building MedPearl? was a team effort, this case study was another collaborative opportunity for us to share how our EMR-integrated digital assistant and clinical knowledge platform will help change how healthcare professionals manage patients with an improved (and faster) workflow. ? Kudos to co-authors Eve Cunningham MD MBA, Jessica Schlicher MD, MBA, Erin Longley MD, Adrián Yanes, and Rebecca Poage, MD, for their hard work! ?? ?? Sending a huge thank you to NEJM Catalyst and NEJM Group for featuring us in their latest issue. ?? ?? At Providence Neuroscience Institute, we are committed to providing the best care for our patients with neurological disorders. That's why we brought together experts from different fields and collaborated with MedPearl to create evidence-based guidelines for managing common conditions like dementia, back pain, and headaches.?
Clinicians often face a high workload, juggling multiple patient cases, administrative tasks and staying current with medical advancements, which can significantly impact their ability to provide thorough and personalized care during each patient encounter. To address these issues, we developed MedPearl, an electronic medical record (EMR)-integrated digital assistant and knowledge platform for primary and urgent care clinicians to answer complex clinical questions, determine if specialty care is necessary, and, if so, determine the next-best action to optimize the referral. The average patient chart has over 220,000 data points! ?? ?? ?? Medical knowledge doubles every three months. ?? ?? ?? It is not humanly possible for us to consume all of the information for which we are accountable. ?? That is why we need to continue to develop supportive technologies, like MedPearl, that ease the way for #clinicians, empowering them with the right information, at the right time, with the relevant patient data, so we can supercharge our decision making. ?? ... and get back to what really matters ... those sacred moments with our patients. ?? Thank you NEJM Catalyst for sharing our story. #innovation #transformation #virtualcare #digitalhealth #AIinhealthcare

Great job to Eve Cunningham MD MBA and team. Dr. Cunningham is a Providence physician and leader who brought MedPearl to life from ideation to reality. #Providence #innovation
A core problem for busy primary care physicians and advanced practice providers/clinicians is making the best possible evaluation and management decisions for multiple problems within the space of a short office visit. When a specialty referral is necessary, it is difficult to rapidly determine what laboratory tests, imaging, first-line medications, and other interventions should occur until the patient is seen. Health care organizations need medically appropriate access, reducing the number of referrals that could be managed by a PCP empowered with next-best specialty care actions, and increasing the number of referrals for the sickest patients most in need of timely specialty and procedural care. To address these issues, Providence developed MedPearl, an electronic medical record-integrated digital assistant and clinical knowledge platform for primary and urgent care clinicians. Frontline clinicians now consult MedPearl during patient visits to answer complex clinical questions, determine if specialty care is necessary, and, if so, determine the next-best action to optimize the referral. The product provides concise, human-authored, algorithmic primary and subspecialty guidance on more than 700 conditions, with an average read time of 2?minutes or less. When a referral is needed, MedPearl supports a precise workup tailored to a specific patient’s medical conditions. Fidelity to human-centered design is the key to the effectiveness of MedPearl. Clinician-driven design, thousands of hours of clinician-to-engineer feedback, and direct observations of the use of the tool in the clinical workflow were integrated throughout the development process. As of June 2024, MedPearl has been used by 6,967 Providence physicians, advanced practice providers, and other care team members who have conducted more than 189,000 point-of-care searches: https://nej.md/3WNYWSj Eve Cunningham MD MBA, Jessica Schlicher MD, MBA, Adrian Yanes, Erin Longley MD, Rebecca Poage, Providence
