As we observe Patient Safety Awareness Week, it’s crucial to highlight the advancements in healthcare technologies that are helping improve patient safety and experiences. Healthcare professionals are facing increasing demands and limited resources, with patient safety at the forefront of their priorities. From critical care environments to dental practices,?Orion Innovations Inc.?is advancing solutions that are making a significant impact on both patient outcomes and the efficiency of care. In acute care settings, the challenge of identifying and tracing infusion lines can result in Adverse Drug Events (ADEs), which cost the healthcare industry billions annually. Our?MedLite ID?is a breakthrough solution that helps address this challenge. A recent study published in the Journal of Infusion Nursing, demonstrated that MedLite ID was 24% faster in accessing the correct medication line and 40% less mentally taxing for healthcare providers, compared to standard labeling practices. The study, which was conducted at?Wake Forest University School of Medicine, found that MedLite ID virtually eliminated errors in low-light conditions, which are common in intensive care units, significantly improving patient safety and workflow efficiency. Meanwhile, in the dental field, patients suffering from a gag reflex often face delays and failed procedures, impacting their overall care experience.?NoGag Oral Care, a consumable powder that is a mixture of salt and citric acid, eliminates the gag reflex within 10 seconds, providing a simple and effective solution. A recent study conducted at?West Coast University’s Dental Hygiene School found that our five-time patented solution was able to reduce the exaggerated pharyngeal gag reflex by an average of 70 percent for up to one hour. By helping patients tolerate dental procedures more comfortably, NoGag is transforming the dental experience for both patients and professionals. MedLite ID and NoGag are examples of how Orion Innovations is transforming patient safety across both the medical and dental fields. By improving workflows, reducing errors, and enhancing patient comfort, these technologies are helping healthcare professionals provide safer, more efficient care. Today, nurses, clinicians, and caregivers are navigating a high-pressure healthcare system with increasing demands and limited resources. In acute and critical care settings, these challenges can cause “infusion confusion” that directly leads to line tracing errors such as Adverse Drug Events (ADEs). In plain terms, infusion confusion is a tangled mess of IV lines that complicate care and impact patient safety. With more patients and fewer IV nurses, including the 19 percent nurse attrition in 2021, line tracing needs to be faster and more effective. On average, healthcare providers are paying $450,000 in avoidable direct ADE costs per year per 100 beds in the hospital. This is from direct costs and does not factor in labor, or patient harm liability suits. Industry-wide, infusion-related errors are estimated to add $2 billion annually to U.S. healthcare costs. In a recently published industry expert article in Medical Device News Magazine, our CEO Rodney Schutt explores these challenges and details why innovative, yet simple, solutions like our MedLite ID Smart-Lite system can help address this complicated problem. MedLite ID can simplify workflows, reduce errors, deliver the safest and highest quality patient care, and support our frontline healthcare heroes in the process.
