It's not the hardware ... it's the software.

My PhD in neuroscience took 7 years for a reason. It takes this long to uncovered the many amazing things about how this miracle organ orchestrates behavior. But honestly, even more impactful for me personally was not an understanding of the neuronal hardware, or the absolutely magical behavioral software. The part I took with me and use every day is one layer up. It's the process of solving an unsolvable problem. 1.???The brain required that I "learning how to learn" about the terra incognita of an organ that was so very far beyond my comfort zone or skill level at the time. 2.???The complexity of the problem meant that, with problems of this scale, going solo is fine but collaboration multiplies what you can hope to achieve. So today, I find that this neuroscience training truly informs my work for wellbeing. Solutions that can actually work require solving for a chaos of overlapping variables like ... biometric health, clinical conditions, nutritional health, emotional health, activity patterns, social connectivity, and of course others. While the Venn Diagram of those partially overlapping variables is chaos, the solution to solve for this unsolvable problem is to multiply what you can achieve, through collaboration: * Predictive analytics data opens the doors of perception to new solutions, when they are combined with wellbeing programs – both looking backward at historical trends, but also looking forward with predictive models. * Care coordination not only completes a continuum of solutions for clients, but also creates a synergy with wellbeing. Only together can they address ALL levels of care for a truly whole organization. * The combination of these three amplify the signal further, each feeding off the other to provide new solutions in new ways -- like complete personalization, at scale. This collaborative solution is MedGuard: my most important lesson from the process of research neuroscience, applied for our groups together.

November gives us "gratitude on the brain". If there were ever a month to practice being grateful, this would be it. Some think about gratitude like an emotional sugar rush -- it makes you feel good for a minute, but then its effect is gone again. But your brain has a different take on gratitude. When your gray matter engages in gratitude, the medial prefrontal cortex?and?anterior cingulate cortex light up like a over zealous house in the holidays trying to win the prize for most "holiday spirit" or something. Back to the brain, these areas are involved in moral cognition, value judgment, and emotional regulation. It’s no surprise then, that this activation fosters emotional resilience against stress and anxiety. But what happens with those brain cells when you make gratitude a longer term practice, even beyond November? The neuroscience principle to remember is this: the more you use a pathway, the more it gets “worn in”; the easier it is to elicit in the future; and the more effective it can become. So actively train your brain. Consciously practice gratitude—whether through journaling, expressing thanks, etc. When you do, neural pathways of emotional resilience are created, sustained, and reinforced. By the way, long term gratitude practice? That's associated with more gray matter, aka, bigger brains. For our groups, do not treat gratitude like an emotional sugar pill, because it's not. Think of it more like long term HIIT training for the hardware of your brain.?
