After analyzing over 80 studies on the topic, researchers concluded that nurse burnout led to lower safety ratings and weakened the overall safety culture. It was strongly linked to medication errors, patient safety incidents, other adverse events, and a higher occurrence of hospital-acquired infections.
To date, most anti-burnout initiatives have focused on individual strategies, like mindfulness or resilience training, aimed at helping individuals manage stress. However, the authors note that effective interventions are often needed at the team or unit level, where healthcare workers benefit from teamwork, a sense of community, professional growth, and recognition.
