Filling information and connection gaps in Detroit through local reporting since 2016 ??
关于我们
Outlier Media is a groundbreaking nonprofit newsroom designed to center and respond to Detroiters’ needs. We believe local news can do more for communities than just cover what happens to them. Our reporting addresses information gaps, systemic failures and connection gaps that create harm in our community. We are a model for others who believe that democratizing information and redistributing power is essential. Our newsroom works toward a vision of a liberated city with healthy civic infrastructure rooted in Detroiters’ participation and self-determination.

Back in April, we surveyed 1,100 Detroiters to find out their voting concerns and priorities leading up to Election Day. Well, Election Day is here. Read more about what Detroiters are thinking about as they head to the polls. ?? https://lnkd.in/eJGH62DV

Happy November! Today we start our year-end campaign. From now until Dec. 31, we are participating in NewsMatch — a collaborative movement that supports public-service reporting. Thanks to a group of Detroiters and NewsMatch, every dollar of the first $15,000 we raise will be matched. Our goal is to raise $40,000 by Dec. 31. We've been here, in Detroit doing the work of listening and responding to your needs. Help us power our mission by making a donation today! https://lnkd.in/gkcBmVfD

Our new reporting series, “What the Cure Doesn’t Fix,” introduces you to Detroiters living with sickle cell disease. Most will likely never be cured — and for those who are, the cure is often seen not as a miracle, but as an important step in a much longer healing journey that all patients must undertake. Basic care for adult “warriors” in Detroit remains inadequate, continuing a racist history of marginalization that has made sickle cell disease a symbol of medical inequity in the United States. Read more about these sickle cell warriors who are advocating for basic care in the wake of new gene editing techniques ?? https://lnkd.in/ggJfSmm2 ?? https://lnkd.in/gaRB32kR
Sickle cell care is often haphazard, uncoordinated for patients

"Detroit is a cheap place to live.” That’s one of the most persistent tropes about Michigan’s largest city, but basic expenses — from housing to transportation — are out of reach for many of its residents. In our Affording Detroit series, we reported on the barriers and costs that make Detroit an expensive place to live for residents — contrary to the narrative that Detroit is easy to afford. https://lnkd.in/g6HwA8nA
