Woods (1856- 1910): nicknamed "The Black Edison," a famous inventor with more than 50 patents, which include electric railway enhancements and the multiplex telegraph Garrett Morgan (1877 - 1963): created the "caution" signal (or yellow light) as well as the gas mask, improving safety measures in both streetway intersections?and hazardous conditions Marie Van Brittan Brown (1922 - 1999): invented the first ever home security system, which established the groundwork for today's surveillance systems Valerie Thomas (1943 - ): data scientist who invented the illusion transmitter, which is still used today for NASA's 3D imaging technology Mark Dean (1957 - ): computer engineer and inventor holding three of nine PC patents for co-creating the IBM personal computer (with color!) Lisa Gelobter (1971 - ): computer scientist and digital media pioneer credited for the development of web animation techniques, including the GIF ___ This month and every month, we seek to encourage diversity and inclusion in tech and all industries. As you may know, yesterday was Groundhog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil's forecast wasn't quite what we were hoping for. In case you're not familiar with Punxsutawney Phil, let us introduce you! He's arguably the most famous weather forecaster ever, despite having no formal meteorological training (that we know of)! Every February 2nd, a grand festival is held in his honor in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Phil emerges from his burrow, and if he sees his shadow, he retreats, signaling six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't, spring is said to arrive early. According to tradition, after making his "prediction," Phil speaks in "Groundhogese" to the Groundhog Club president, who then translates his message to an eager audience. This quirky custom dates back to 18th-century Germany, where a badger or bear was used to forecast the weather. Unfortunately, this year, the esteemed groundhog did see his shadow—meaning winter isn't over just yet. But there's a silver lining! Across the U.S., there are 19 "weather-predicting" animals, and Phil ranks just 17th in accuracy—with only a 35% success rate. So, who's to say an early spring isn't still in the cards?
