Lean In and McKinsey & Company recently released their 9th annual Women in the Workplace report and found that despite more women reaching C-suite positions, progress in early-stage promotions into management remains slow, limiting their advancement into top roles. The result: successfully building talent up – from entry level to senior leadership – still remains one of the most fundamental challenges for organizations globally. Although companies have made progress, it’s not consistent. That’s why organizations that center around the advancement of women in healthcare, like MedtechWOMEN and MedExecWomen, are so important, and why I’m so proud to be the executive sponsor of Philips Women Lead (PWL). I have never been a #feminist for the sake of #feminism, but I absolutely 100% believe that female leaders belong in the c-suite, and as Ruth Bader Ginsberg famously said, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.” Is it me, or are the tides finally turning on female leadership not just in the c-suite, but in #MedTech broadly, and in MSK specifically? #Ortho and #spine have always been male dominated fields – from the #surgeons, to the #reps, to the #executives – men dominated the OR, the boardroom, and the discussion – much of the cultivation beginning in college on the athletic field. Women on executive teams have often been relegated to administrative roles – HR, legal, compliance, but not the highest-level product, strategy, and P&L owning roles. But women bring so much to this world – a keen strategic mind, creativity, dare I even say empathy that is so sorely needed to connect the business world to the patients we serve. In the past few months I was so lucky to participate in the star studded MedExecWomen event and also in Materialise’s Leading Minds event, where a powerhouse at the forefront of 3DP is led by a brilliant woman - Brigitte de Vet-Veithen. It has been empowering to see the leadership that I hope my daughter will get to take for granted. We can still do better than 10-20% of the c-suite…but this landscape looks different than when I started my career. I have collated (a likely non-exhaustive list), of these fantastic female MSK leaders guiding us into a new world in MSK – ASC transitions, digital tools, a new frontier of value based care, pricing challenges, new global markets. She is passionate about her leadership role and her 17 years with Johnson & Johnson. She is paying it forward everyday encouraging young women to enter into STEM ( science, technology, engineering, and math) industry positions. Johnson and Johnson allows and encourages their employees to actively engage local communities to share in their initiatives. Leslie is so impressive and a tremendous role model and mentor.
