Happy Birthday, to the AMEDD Civilian Corps! Civilians have worked with the Army Medical Department since the Revolutionary War, but the AMEDD Civilian Corps wasn’t established until 1996. The Army Medical Department Civilian Corps isn’t a corps created by law in the same way that military branches are. It was established by the Army Medical Department as a way to improve management of civilian professionals in health care occupations. In 1991, the Department of the Army put in place a civilian proponency plan and The Surgeon General was named as the proponent for all civilian healthcare positions in the Army. The Health Service Command’s Civilian Personnel Director was given responsibility for of executing that mission. The term “civilian corps chief” was used to describe the Personnel Director, but the title was unofficial. A December 1996 article in The Mercury welcomed “Sharon Coleman Ferguson, MEDCOM’s assistant deputy chief of staff for personnel (civilian personnel) and Civilian Corps Chief.” Ms. Ferguson’s position as Civilian Corps Chief was strengthened when Lt. Gen. Ron Blanck, the Army Surgeon General, included her as “Chief of the Civilian Corps” in an article published in the August 1997 issue of The Mercury. Her role as assistant deputy chief of staff was given second billing. Ms. Ferguson was the first person to be designated by The Surgeon General as a Chief of the Civilian Corps and because of this the founding of the Civilian Corps is dated to her assignment to that position on March 26, 1996. #ArmyCivilianCorps #IAmAnArmyCivilian #ToConserveFightingStrength

"You’ve just got to do everything you can when it’s your time to do it.” ~ SGT Salvatore Giunta, Medal of Honor Recipient Today we honor the men and the woman who earned the highest medal bestowed by congress. Those individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor performed feats that seem impossible, and in the face of their own fear, they responded with actions that went beyond bravery and well beyond the call of duty. Many sacrificed their lives and were awarded the medal posthumously. There will never be words that can convey our gratitude for their sacrifice and bravery. Dakota Meyer, Marine Corps recipient of the Medal of Honor in September 2011 for his actions in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, in 2009, spoke to a paramedic class, a critical care flight paramedic class, leadership from the 32nd Medical Brigade, and nearly 900 combat medic students from the 232nd Medical Battalion. He took questions during each visit, candidly answering questions from students, instructors and cadre alike. #MedalOfHonorMonday #USMC #ArmyMedicine #DevelopLeaders US Army TRADOC U.S. Army Combined Arms Center
