Enveloped viruses like IAV produce both spherical virions (100 nm, resource-efficient) and filamentous forms (micron-long, antibody-resistant), but the triggers behind this shape-shifting remained elusive. ?? ? Researchers developed a quantitative flow virometry assay to track viral particle shapes under varying conditions—including infection intensity, replication inhibition, and antibody exposure. They found that IAV: ? Rapidly shifts to spherical dominance in optimal environments (maximizing replication efficiency). ? Prioritizes filament production under stress (e.g., antibodies or attenuated replication), enhancing survival. ? Achieves this without genetic mutations—environmental cues alone drive adaptation. ? This phenotypic flexibility allows IAV to toggle strategies in real-time, balancing resource use and immune evasion.
