How can risk sharing save lives? High levels of risk - whether real or perceived - often prevent manufacturers selling health products in low- and middle-income countries. This means people in the poorest countries wait years if not decades to access the same products used in high-income countries - or sometimes never at all. Volume guarantees provide manufacturers with an assured minimum order volume over a designated period in exchange for a commitment to better pricing and guaranteed supply, taking away the risk of entering that market. This is how MedAccess is reducing risk to save lives. Read more in this Financial Times case study. ?? https://lnkd.in/eyAHJES4

This #InternationalWomensDay, we are pleased to share an update on our work to advance women's health, via our agreement for dual rapid diagnostic tests for HIV/syphilis for pregnant women. A total of 57 low- and middle-income countries have procured the dual test since our agreement with SD BIOSENSOR INC and Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. began in November 2021. Health facilities in these countries are now able to test pregnant women for both conditions simultaneously. Before the dual test, rates of HIV testing were much higher than for syphilis as countries prioritised domestic health budgets towards single HIV tests. Now, more pregnant women can access testing for syphilis and any necessary treatment if they receive a positive diagnosis - protecting their babies from stillbirth or complications arising from congenital syphilis. #IWD2025 | #AccelerateAction

Medical oxygen has been an essential treatment for more than 150 years. Yet five billion people still lack access to it. A new article from the The Lancet Group Global Health explores the crisis and calls for additional investments to address the challenge. ?? Did you know? Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women in sub-Saharan Africa. The region accounts for over one-third of global cervical cancer deaths, despite the region representing less than 15% of the world’s female population. Timely HPV screening is essential for early detection. Yet access to high-precision screening remains limited, with coverage in low- and middle-income countries averaging only 19%, compared to 63% in high-income countries. This International #HPV Awareness Day, we call for more equitable access to HPV screening and vaccines.

?? Good news: A new river blindness medicine has been introduced in Ghana as part of a mass drug administration where the drug both prevents and treats the illness. Central to the effort was the unique blend of innovative financing that was used to enable Medicines Development for Global Health to bring the drug to market. During the drug development process, initiatives such as impact investments, grants and philanthropic funds and the sale of a U.S. FDA priority review voucher were used. In 2023, at least 249.5 million people required preventive treatment against river blindness, so this is welcome news for this neglected tropical disease. Why does market shaping matter? In a healthy market, products are available for patients when they need them at prices they can afford. This means having a range of suppliers in the market providing sufficient volumes and competing to provide high quality products at sustainable prices. Clear visibility of demand and payments is needed alongside a stable policy environment so that manufacturers can plan their investments. Our innovative financing tools help strengthen health markets so that more products are available for more people at affordable prices. #MarketShaping | #InnovativeFinance | #SustainableImpact

Sometimes, working in global health can feel a little abstract. We're often far away from the people we serve and the suppliers we partner with, and even the products we're trying to improve access to. I had a small insight into the latter earlier this month, when I attended the launch of SD Biosensor's new India Manufacturing Plant. It was great to see where and how these products are made before being sent to those who need them! MedAccess has partnered with SD Biosensor to boost access to Dual HIV-Syphilis tests for pregnant women, and deploy G6PD tests which ensure the correct treatment for malaria. https://lnkd.in/g8FwKP2a SD BIOSENSOR INC
