?? Celebrating Healthcare Innovation! ??
Exciting news from the University of Massachusetts Amherst! A groundbreaking team of nurse-engineers has been honored with an ANA Innovation Award for their work in improving patient safety and nursing workflows.
The team, led by Karen K. Giuliano, PhD, RN, MBA, FAAN (Nursing Co-Director, Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation), Jeannine Blake, PhD RN (Assistant Professor of Nursing), and @Juan Jiménez (Associate Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering), has developed a revolutionary IV pole designed to improve the safety and ease of administering IV medications at the hospital bedside. This innovative design addresses a critical issue: preventable medication errors caused by improper IV smart pump setup.
?? In the U.S., approximately 500,000 hospitalized patients are affected by preventable medication errors each year, many of which occur with IV smart pumps. By creating an adjustable crossbar that automatically maintains the optimal height differential between the IV pump and medication container, this IV pole reduces manual adjustments, simplifies setup, and improves fluid flow accuracy – ultimately reducing medication errors.
?? Kudos to the team for their visionary approach, which merges engineering expertise with clinical knowledge, making a direct impact on patient safety. Their collaboration is a perfect example of how nursing and engineering can work hand in hand to solve real-world healthcare challenges. ????
This achievement also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary innovation in healthcare, as supported by the ANA Foundation's Team Innovation Award.
?? “By bringing together expertise from both nursing and engineering, we are breaking barriers and reimagining how technology can support nurses and improve patient care,” said Karen Giuliano.
??“The work of Drs. Giuliano, Blake and Jiménez, along with the Elaine Marieb Center, represents the future of healthcare innovation,” said?Frank Sup,?engineering co-director of the Elaine Marieb Center.
We look forward to seeing more impactful innovations from the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation in the future!
