We train the next generation of ‘whole-brain’ mechanical engineers to lead with both creativity and analytical thinking.
关于我们
Here at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we pursue the mechanical engineering of the future. Students learn the fundamentals of mechanical engineering by focusing on core disciplines in mechanics and materials, design and manufacturing, and robotics and biosystems, together with essential areas of mathematics and physical sciences. Students then dive into cross-cutting topics such as Advanced Manufacturing, AI and Design, Biosystems and Health, Computational Engineering, Energy and Sustainability, Micro/Nanoengineering, and Robotics and Autonomy. With its roots in mechanical engineering, a hallmark at Northwestern is design. We provide outstanding coursework, projects, and activities in which fundamental course knowledge is synthesized and applied in a holistic fashion with wide-ranging design projects. We offer outstanding research opportunities, with a strong culture of collaboration that enables our students and faculty to tackle the world's most important and difficult technical challenges.

The Mechanical Engineering department at Northwestern University is announcing a search for sponsored?projects?for our senior-year capstone course in product design and engineering. This course takes place during the Winter & Spring quarters at Northwestern (January – June 2024), during which teams of 6-8 senior students undertake?projects?exploring product development, including user needs identification, specification development, creative concept ideation, detailed engineering analysis & concept evaluation, and fabrication of various fidelity prototypes, concluding with a final Alpha-level functional prototype. The ideal?project?for this course is: o Innovative – No obvious solution exists, and will challenge students to research the user and explore various solutions. o Decomposable – The?project?is not limited to a single sub-discipline of mechanical engineering, but rather?calls?on as many areas as possible. o Feasible – Each team will be challenged to complete a functional, high-fidelity model by the end of 20 weeks. Submitted?projects?must be able to be completed within this time frame.? Linked below is a detailed call for projects, which includes short examples of past projects &?sponsorship?details.?In order to support the prototyping, testing, and iteration steps required to create a robust and reliable final product, we request that each?sponsor?provide?financial support of $9000?for each project sponsored. ME?398?Project Sponsorship Packet Northwestern?ME?398?- Course Webpage Sponsoring?a?project?presents the opportunity to tap the resources of our department, including our world-renowned faculty and resources (who advise on the?technical and academic integrity of their?projects)?, as well as an excellent opportunity to recruit graduating seniors over a long term?project. With a fresh set of eyes on a problem you may have, new paths and solutions often present themselves. Please contact Michael Beltran or Jeremy Keys if you have any questions, or if you would like to submit a?project?or referral, at?[email protected], or at?630-427-4613.?We request that a brief?project?description be submitted by December 2, 2023.
