I've added "Investor" to my tagline (is it called a tagline? what's it called?) because that's what I do! Several years ago, a wise advisor of mine suggested that we adopt a "PE model for social change, investing time and money into a nonprofit while taking a board seat" so that we could influence change for good in our community here in Birmingham. Well. That's what I already do! Sort of. Buying ownership stake is not my style so much. I'm here to do good work with good friends (and as an Enneagram 6, being copacetic with my team is paramount!). But I do invest both time and money into the organizations I work with, and more specifically into the badass women who I choose to work for. I am SUPER DUPER proud of the returns that I am seeing. This week alone... Courtney Davis led Urban Community Montessori to get approved as a service provider under the Alabama CHOOSE Act, which means that we will be eligible to receive state "voucher" funding in the fall. This is a game changer for UCM, as over 50% of our students have historically paid "sliding scale" tuition. The increased revenue will enable us to grow to meet demand. (Let me know if you are aware of a property in Titusville that would be perfect for the sweetest Montessori school :)). Mariohn Michel hosted an intimate "office warming" to celebrate new beginnings for Breakthrough Birmingham. Exciting news! In December, Dopl Technologies successfully closed our Pre-Seed round, securing $1.5M to advance our mission. This funding is accelerating our efforts to bring life-saving ultrasound exams to underserved patients, enabling earlier detection of critical diseases in our $20B beachhead market. The round was led by TVF, with contribution from The Pitch Fund, Seattle Angel Conference, Precursor Ventures, Measured Capital, Dream Variation Ventures, Flywheel (NCW Tech Alliance), Dreamward Event Fund (Washington State Black Angel Network), University of Washington, and several visionary angel investors.
