Addressing senior hunger and isolation since 1974.
关于我们
Meals on Wheels serves home-delivered meals to residents of Wake County who are 60 years old and over and are homebound and vulnerable. Homebound means the applicant cannot work, volunteer, drive or leave their residence without assistance. Vulnerable means the applicant is unable to perform the basic activities of daily living without assistance due to physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological, or social impairments. Over 2,200 volunteers help us deliver meals Monday through Friday each week. Meals on Wheels of Wake County was founded on February 12, 1974 with ten volunteers meeting at Hillyer Christian Church to deliver meals in downtown Raleigh. Since then over 9 million meals have been served in Wake County alone. Meals on Wheels of Wake County is associated with the Meals on Wheels America, which is comprised of over 5,000 Senior Nutrition Programs and 800,000 volunteers in the U.S. dedicated to ending senior hunger. Meals on Wheels allows older adults in Wake County to maintain their dignity and independence and remain in their homes. When a volunteer delivers a meal to a homebound recipient, we are not only providing a meal, but we are also providing a visit and a check up. It is comforting to family members to know that someone is stopping in daily to be sure that everything is okay. Over the years, we have touched so many lives in Wake County and beyond by reaching out to our seniors and people with disabilities to keep them connected to our community.

Sandra and Anthony have been married for 54 years, and have been attending our Redeeming Love Friendship Cafe for the past 5 years. Today they enjoyed shopping with free vouchers for fresh produce and local foods from Ripe For Revival alongside the 40 other Cafe attendees! This was the third installment of our four visits from the Ripe For Revival truck thanks to a generous grant from RTI International. Thanks to their partnership, Meals on Wheels of Wake County will continue to provide access to nutritious and fresh food for the seniors we serve! ?????????? #WakeMOW

Today at our Tucker Street Friendship Cafe, we worked in partnership with UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing, Vaccine Ambassadors and Disability Rights NC to vaccinate seniors against the flu. It was a great day to get a flu vaccine! Each senior who received a vaccination was given informational items, gift cards, COVID tests, and all kinds of other goodies from our partners. The greatest takeaway of all is that these seniors will have vaccinations that will lessen the likelihood of severe illness from the flu that can affect many seniors. There are many ways to avoid respiratory illnesses this fall and winter, and prevention is the best way to keep from getting very sick from flu! #risklessdomore Stay tuned for our next flu vaccine clinics: 10/21 at Wake Forest Friendship Cafe 10/28 at Five Points Friendship Cafe

It’s Ageism Awareness Day! Throughout the day, we’ll drop a new question every hour to #TalkAboutAgeism and explore how it affects our communities, workplaces, and lives. Question 1: What does ageism look like in everyday life? Share examples you’ve encountered or witnessed. Ageism can be subtle or obvious, and every story about it matters. Share your thoughts in the comments, or share this post with your perspective! Find more resources at https://lnkd.in/gyWWHA_s

Looking to get your flu vaccine this year? Come to one of our three flu vaccine clinics this October! No appointments are necessary, just bring your insurance card if you have one. Prevention is the best way to keep from getting very sick from flu. There are many ways to avoid respiratory illnesses this fall and winter. The more of these you do, the better: ?Get vaccinated. ?Open windows and use fans to improve ventilation and reduce virus levels indoors. Gather outdoors whenever possible to also reduce the risk of exposure to respiratory viruses. ?Wear a mask in public places, especially in crowds. ?Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. ?Avoid contact with people who are sick, and if you get infected yourself, stay at home and away from others, especially those who may be at higher risk for severe disease. #RiskLessDoMore
