How does Campbell's reduce food waste and feed hungry Camden residents and make an impact on food security and food waste across New Jersey? By being part of the Meal Recovery Coalition (MRC), a new alliance of private, nonprofit and government stakeholders dedicated to recovering surplus meals from corporate cafeterias and safely delivering them to hungry New Jersey residents. The Campbell Soup Company is one of seven New Jersey-based corporations participating in this innovative collaboration, spearheaded by Share My Meals Inc. Other founding corporate members include Bristol Myers Squibb, Novo Nordisk, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Sanofi, and Capital Health (US) “There are so many benefits for us to participate in the meal recovery program at Campbell's”, Kate Barrett, president of the Campbell’s Foundation, said. “Certainly number one, improving food security in our hometown, by donating food that would have otherwise gone to waste. So far in just the first nine months or so of this program, approximately 1,200 pounds [1,000 meals] were donated to Cathedral Kitchen and to residents in need. It’s also a great opportunity for us to partner across our organization to work with our environmental sustainability team to keep this waste out of the waste stream and reduce greenhouse gases. We also engage employees in the program by having them deliver that food to Cathedral Kitchen each week. Let’s Feed Thousands of People and Stop Feeding the Landfills Talk about an ambitious goal: the newly launched Meal Recovery Coalition (MRC) aims to recover 500,000 surplus meals from large cafeterias annually by 2026, feeding an additional 6,400 people a week—all while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from leftover food that ends up in landfills. “Today, we are celebrating the launch of the Meal Recovery Coalition, a unique collaboration of organizations focused on alleviating food insecurity and food waste”, said Hélène Lanctuit, CEO of Share My Meals Inc., the driving force behind the formation of the MRC, during a summit launching the innovative alliance of private, nonprofit and government partners. “We are here because none of us can bear to see people in our community sometimes working two or three jobs unable to feed their family. And we can't bear to see nutritious meals prepared with care thrown in the trash. Fighting hunger and reducing food waste are issues New Jersey is tackling head on, Gov. Phil Murphy said today at the launch of the revolutionary Meal Recovery Coalition, an alliance of private, nonprofit and government partners spearheaded by New Jersey nonprofit Share My Meals Inc. ? “I am proud to see New Jersey lead the way in addressing hunger and food waste,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “The Meal Recovery Coalition is taking bold steps forward by pioneering this effort. This initiative will not only divert food from going to landfill and compost—which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions—but will also put meals on the tables of New Jersey residents facing food insecurity.” New Jersey Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, a leading advocate for food security who has made the fight against hunger a central part of his policy agenda, was also on hand to celebrate the Meal Recovery Coalition launch. The delegates, including experts in food security and waste reduction, nonprofits and representatives of the Coalition’s founding organizations engaged in discussions on how best to collaborate to support food security through meal recovery in their communities.
