Congrats to both Tidal Flight and Tropic Ocean Airways!
We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Tropic Ocean Airways, with an agreement to bring 20 of our Polaris Amphibian aircraft to Tropic Ocean Airways' routes in Florida, the Bahamas, and beyond. Not only does Tropic Ocean Airways operate one of North America's largest seaplane fleets, but Rob Ceravolo and Tropic Ocean Airways have drawn on their deep experience to help launch seaplane operations worldwide. Polaris will serve Tropic Ocean Airways' goals of leading the way in sustainable aviation and next-gen technology while also driving a reduction in operating costs that brings seaplane aviation to more people and communities. Including our agreement with Tropic Ocean Airways, we have secured 8 Letters of Intent (LOIs) for purchase of aircraft from seaplane and commuter airlines worldwide, representing $650M+ in orders. We shared this amazing news today at the Future Opportunities for Seaplanes and Amphibious Aviation 2025 (FOSAA 25) conference in Miami after Rob gave an insightful keynote address. Thank you to the QUAYNOTE COMMUNICATIONS LIMITED team for organizing FOSAA 25 and to the other companies and industry leaders at the conference who are leading the development in the seaplane space. Christmas Calendar Day?20 ?The largest wartime aircraft orphaned by aviation technology were the giant Martin flying boats. In 1938, when the U.S. Navy wanted a “flying dreadnaught” — a heavily armed flying boat — it was an opportunity for Glenn Luther Martin to demonstrate the value of his flying boats. By the time five were launched in 1944, land-based aircraft had made flying boats obsolete, and the U.S. Navy used them as troop and freight carriers. In line with the routes they served, the aircraft were given “Pacific” names. There were five of these — the Philippine Mars, the Caroline Mars, the Marshall Mars, the Marianas Mars, and the Hawaii Mars. The Marshall Mars was lost near Hawaii on April 5, 1950; the four remaining aircraft flew until the summer of 1956, when they were beached at Naval Air Station Alameda on San Francisco Bay, waiting to be scrapped. But Dan McIvor, the chief pilot for MacMillan Bloedel had an epiphany: the four flying?boats could be adapted to scoop up and drop water on wildfires. The first very large airtankers (VLATs), all four were purchased for $100,000 U.S. — a bargain considering they had originally cost the U.S. Navy $3.5 million each. Navy crews flew them to the Patricia Bay seaplane base near Victoria, where Fairey Aviation converted them to waterbombing. The Marianas Mars crashed into Mount Moriarty near Nanaimo on June 23, 1961, and the following year, the Caroline Mars was damaged beyond repair in a storm. But the Hawaii and Philippine Mars entered service in 1963 and fought wildfires for more than forty years. The Philippine Mars was retired in 2012 and at this writing is on its way to Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson, Arizona. The Hawaii Mars had its last fire season in 2015 and on August 11, 2024 made its last flight from Port Alberni to the Saanich Inlet, Victoria?to be placed in the British Columbia Aviation Museum. Would that Glenn Martin and Dan McIvor were there to see it. FIRE EATERS: The People and Aircraft Combatting Wildfires Over the Last Century. Available May 2025. Reserve your copy on Amazon now.?
