Work is not working for everyone in Memphis, Tennessee.?A third of Memphis residents, including many workers and job seekers, are currently experiencing or at risk of living in poverty; 200,000 people live near or below the poverty line, and the city’s poverty rate is double the national average. Memphis Works for Everyone (MemWorks), a partnership between MDRC and?Slingshot Memphis, aims to determine what programs, policies, and interventions may be needed to help more workers find living-wage work and improve their economic mobility. This report offers reflections from focus groups with Memphis workers and job seekers to better understand existing employment pathways and areas that could be improved.

MDRC and SUNY Westchester Community College announced today new study results from MDRC's rigorous random assignment evaluation of SUNY WCC’s Viking ROADS (Resources for Obtaining Associate Degrees and Success) program. The findings were released at an event at SUNY WCC. After three years, Viking ROADS increased graduation rates by a notable 12 percentage points, a remarkable result considering that the program study was launched shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. The program also boosted full-time enrollment and credit accumulation. Viking ROADS, launched in 2018?with major support from Arnold Ventures and an anonymous WCC Foundation donor, is based closely on the successful The City University of New York's CUNY ASAP, a comprehensive community college program that has boosted graduation rates in prior evaluations in New York City and Ohio. SUNY WCC received technical assistance from CUNY during the study replication. The State University of New York has expanded the program to 25 campuses reaching more than 4,000 students in 2024. As an undergraduate, I navigated three Bee Line buses on the pathway to a degree: the #7, the #20 and the #40.Traversing across Westchester to the Bronx, depending on the semester. I attended SUNY Westchester Community College during the summer and Lehman College for the remainder of the year. Today, I drove to WCC for this wonderful celebration, reflecting on those years and thinking, "That was a really long bus ride!" A woman named Annie quickly reminded me how vital that bus ride is to so many students who seek the opportunity to attend college. Also, a reminder of how important the Metrocards distributed through?the State University of New York?ASAP program are. Congratulations to?Belinda Miles,? Donna Linderman,?and?Leonore Rodrigues for these results and continuing to make college a place where all are welcome and dreams are attainable!

I fell in love with early math while coaching on the Making Pre-K Count team referenced here. These days I support preschool teachers in Western MA for TeachingWorks as part of the Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative and use a lot of the same evidence-based activities and approaches!
More than 40 states and the District of Columbia include college and career readiness in their school accountability systems. Many see readiness as a crucial aspect of our educational system and direct resources toward preparing students for college and careers. But ensuring students' long-term success can’t wait until high school or even middle school; it must start much earlier. Perhaps surprisingly to some, high-quality early math experiences in pre-K through the third grade are just as important as early literacy. Yet most children aren’t getting high-quality early math. Research shows that investments in early mathematics education can improve student outcomes, write MDRC's Shira Mattera & Sharon Huang and Laura Bornfreund of New America – Education Policy Program. The combination of skilled instruction and proven curricula creates a strong foundation for children's future mathematical understanding and academic success.
