March 14th is World Sleep Day, and this year's theme is “Sleep is Essential for Health,” which emphasizes the critical role that sleep plays in maintaining overall health and well-being. ? As Surendra Sodhi, M.D., Chief Advisor of Aeromedical Services for MD ONBOARD, explains, in aviation, sleep assumes an even more critical connotation as it can impact crew alertness and performance, thereby directly affecting the safety of flight operations. From Colgan Flight 3407 to Air India Express Flight 812, or more recently, Batik Air Flight 6723, lack of sleep, fatigue, and decreased alertness and performance were the alleged accident causes. Therefore, for the aviation community this subject assumes great importance. ? Flight crews and airline staff operate across time zones, making jet lag a constant challenge. To manage jet lag, some of the strategies that can be adopted are: ? Gradually adjust your schedule: If your stay will be for a longer period, try to adjust your sleep and meal times prior to departure to better align with the destination’s time zone. Shift your schedule by 1-2 hours each day if possible. If your stay will be for short duration (2-3 days), then it is better to remain on your home time zone. ? Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight. Avoid excessive alcohol & caffeine, as they can disrupt sleep and dehydrate you. ? Get Sunlight Exposure: Spend time in natural light as much as feasible. Sunlight helps regulate the circadian rhythm. ? Take Short Naps: If you’re feeling extremely tired upon arrival, a short nap (20-30 minutes) can help re-energize you without disrupting your night-time sleep. ? Use Sleep Medications Judiciously: If necessary, consider using melatonin supplements or other sleep aids temporarily to help reset your sleep cycle. For aircrew—please consult your company doctor/medical professional before using any medication. ? Create a comfortable sleep environment: Use a comfortable mattress and pillow, and block out noise and light by using ear plugs and eye masks. ? Stick to a Routine: Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. ? Eat according to local time: Align your meals with the local schedule to help reset your internal clock. Do not indulge in heavy meals or excessive alcohol consumption. ? By implementing these strategies, you can help mitigate the symptoms of jet lag and recover more quickly after traveling across time zones. At MD ONBOARD, we are committed to prioritizing crew well-being and ensuring that health and safety are never compromised—because well-rested crews make for safer skies. Let us resolve to adopt proper and efficient sleep hygiene measures and “sleep” our way to good physical, mental and emotional health. Sleep Tight, Wake up Bright. Disruptive passenger behavior is becoming the new turbulence—and it's on the rise. Since the pandemic, unruly incidents have surged, leading to flight diversions, legal action, and operational disruptions. Stress, mental health struggles, and substance use are major contributors, pushing airlines to tighten alcohol policies and review crew intervention protocols. But prevention doesn’t start in the air—it starts on the ground. Proactive screening, early intervention, and real-time decision support can make all the difference. The FAA’s Zero-Tolerance Policy has shown that strong consequences work, but lasting change requires smarter, industry-wide action. At MD ONBOARD, we go beyond reactive measures. Our real-time risk assessments, inflight medical support, and tailored crew training programs help airlines identify risks early, reduce incidents, and protect crew and passengers. Early detection + Smarter interventions = Safer flights. How is your airline addressing this challenge? Let’s discuss. #AviationSafety #PassengerWellbeing #DisruptivePassengerBehavior #FAAZeroTolerancePolicy
