CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Students from Hampton University, Howard University, Morehouse College, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and the University of Central Florida took part in a two-day event showcasing the work of Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific and Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA) interns. The event, held July 16-19, 2024, included tours of the MCTSSA campus and the NIWC Pacific campus. During their visits, the interns, mentors, and staff shared project presentations and toured various labs, including MCTSSA’s Systems of Systems Lab, Radio Frequency Lab, and Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch. NIWC Pacific showcased its STEM Family Fair, Internship Reflection Period, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conversations. "This was an absolutely wonderful and insightful tour and experience,” said TeKali Arnold, NIWC Pacific program manager and Deputy NAVWAR STEM Outreach coordinator. “The visits fostered a great session for engaging and brainstorming ideas to expand our programs and future collaborations." Throughout the summer, the interns worked alongside technical teams, developing new products and processes, and gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies. Their contributions were instrumental in advancing the Centers’ project capabilities, while the program provided valuable exposure to STEM careers and real-world applications. Timothy Gramp, Chief Engineer for the U.S. Marine Corps and Deputy to the Commander for Systems Engineering and Acquisition Logistics at Marine Corps Systems Command, praised the interns’ efforts, stating, “Watching these talented interns share their summer projects left me humbled and excited for the future of Naval Research & Development." Maurice Civers-Davis, Deputy Director of the Department of the Navy HBCU/MI Program office embedded within the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Founder/ Director of the NAVWAR HBCU/MI Cyber and Data Science Internship Program stated, “These types of collaborations allow the Department of the Navy to be greater enablers of the talent pipeline produced at the nation’s HBCU/MIs. Preparing underrepresented student populations for employment in technical fields directly supports the Secretary of the Navy’s (STEM) Roadmap for building the next generation of naval workforce, thus strengthening our diverse team, increasing our mission to deliver Information Warfare capability.” This internship program not only highlighted the diverse talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Institutions but also reinforced the importance of STEM education in shaping the future of national security and technological innovation.
