At McTrans, we know that π (pi) isn’t just about circles and delicious pies—it’s a fundamental constant that shapes the world of traffic engineering and transportation modeling! From roundabouts to curvature calculations in road design, signal timing optimizations, and microsimulation models, π plays a crucial role in safer, more efficient roadways. As we celebrate Pi Day (3.14), let’s recognize the mathematical foundations that drive innovation in traffic analysis and simulation. Whether you’re optimizing traffic flow, calibrating models, or developing next-gen transportation solutions, π is always along for the ride! #PiDay #TransportationEngineering #TrafficModeling #McTrans #Simulation #TrafficAnalysis #UF

Do you know that intersections that are part of an interchange ramp terminal operate differently than a pair of regular intersections due to their proximity? The operation of closely spaced ramp terminals is covered under HCM Chapter 23 (Ramp Terminals and Alternative Intersections), and is available in HCS Streets for the following configurations: - Diamond - Partial Cloverleaf (Parclo) - Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) - Diverging Diamond (DDI) Check our latest article with detailed instructions on how to model these ramp terminals in HCS: https://lnkd.in/eGthjuSR

Our own Fabio Sasahara, PhD, PMP had a productive time this weekend visiting #ATSSA's #TrafficExpo2025! He had the opportunity to deliver a presentation to the Traffic Signals Committee about our Signal Warrants Tool, which was just updated in HCS2025 to implement the updated Signal Warrants methodology in Chapter 4C of the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices). The Signal Warrants Tool is part of the HCS Suite and streamlines the process of evaluating 9 different conditions that may warrant the installation of a traffic signal. Calibration is essential in traffic simulation to ensure the model accurately reflects real-world conditions. It fine-tunes parameters like driver behavior, speed distributions, and capacity constraints to match observed data, making predictions more realistic and useful for decision-making. This process reduces uncertainty and enhances the model’s effectiveness in supporting transportation planning. Calibrating a model is often a time-consuming process, based on a trial-and-error approach that adjusts input parameters until model outputs match real-world data. For the calibration of freeway models,?Highway Capacity Software?(HCS) provides a “Calibration Table” to help streamline the process.
