Yesterday, I had the joy of attending #DevexWorld in Washington, D.C. representing McPherson Strategies, thanks to our client, Alight. It was a great opportunity to learn about the global development landscape amid shifting political landscapes, a climate crisis, and escalating humanitarian crises. I was especially inspired by sessions that explored impactful storytelling, how fiction can reshape the way we think about aid, the role of technology in achieving the SDGs, and what’s at stake in the upcoming presidential election. For instance, by highlighting the compassionate side of aid in storytelling, we can help counter the despair and burnout that many feel when doom-scrolling through today’s humanitarian crises. Fiction, in particular, allows us to connect emotionally with these issues before a crisis happens, fostering a unique sense of empathy and understanding. It’s interesting to consider how integrating the humanities with policy can open up new and broader ways of thinking.
