On any construction site, machines do a lot of heavy lifting. Dozers, excavators, haul trucks, and paving equipment power productivity, but their performance depends on one key factor: the right lubrication strategy. Construction sites expose equipment to extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and constant dust and dirt. A poorly lubricated machine wears out faster, leading to costly downtime and repairs. ? “Every construction fleet wants the same thing—maximized uptime and longer machine life,” says Rob Meldrum, Senior Lubrication Engineer at ExxonMobil. “But some companies need machines to last decades, while others operate on trade cycles and just need reliability for a set period. The lubrication plan has to fit the business model.” Most fleets own a lot of machines that come from multiple OEMs that each recommend different lubricants. This often leads to dozens of oils and greases on site, which raises costs and increases the risk of misapplication. A streamlined approach using the fewest correct lubricants simplifies inventory, reduces training complexity, and keeps preventive maintenance on track. “Choosing the right lubricants isn’t just about protecting engines and hydraulics,” Rob says. “It’s about protecting a project’s timeline and bottom line.” How does your operation manage lubricant complexity?
