Last week, McSal’s Boston office hosted our second Dearborn STEM Academy student presentation. With the group, we discussed how structural engineering is involved from day 1 in Design Development throughout the last day of Construction. Using our recent project Parcel 12 as an example, we highlighted how collaboration plays an important part between us and the architect and contractor, the intricacies of the project like the structural column, the plaza over the highway, and the vibrations produced from the adjacent train station. Afterwards, we had the students use Mola Kits in Teams to design a structure that was capable of withstanding Lateral Loads. We loved having this talented group and hope to host more sessions in the future!

Hines’ South Station Tower is nearing completion, featuring a striking architectural design by Pelli Clarke & Partners. To accommodate heavy commuter traffic, the tower is elevated on massive parabolic arches, creating an open area dubbed “The Great Space.” This newly opened section contrasts sharply with the dark, compressed train platforms, offering natural light and dramatic design elements. Construction continues on fare gates and escalator connections, with the full 51-story office-condominium tower set for completion in 2026. Leasing has begun, with 99,000 of 680,000 square feet of office space taken, and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. branded condos starting at $1.3 million. Our recent project at 1000 Westchester in the Bronx with GF55 Architects joins our neighboring project at 980 Westchester to create a two-building mixed-use development. The six-story building at 1000 Westchester is an academic campus consisting of two charter schools with commercial space, while 980 Westchester is a seven-story residential building. 1000 Westchester is a 6-story building in the Bronx that accommodates 2 charter schools and 19,879 SF of commercial space on the ground floor. Designed by GF55 Architects, the building serves as an academic campus of sorts with lobby entrances to each charter school on Fox Street and Simpson Street. Grades are separated by floors.?Shared spaces can be found on various floors of the building. Brick, precast EIFS panels, and glass compose the building facades. Gold-colored EIFS panels playfully call out the charter school entrances and reflect the school’s banners and flags. Materials, colors, and signage are integrated into the building design as a means of wayfinding. Responding to the local Bronx environment, the 118,303 SF building is taller in the center of the structure where the gym and rooftop playground are located. The massing of the building gradually steps down on the sides to share a common roof line with adjacent buildings and to compete with the visually loud elevated subway tracks along Westchester Avenue.
