From ensuring clean water to protecting ecosystems, wastewater facilities might not always be visible, but their impact is undeniable. McKissack & McKissack is proud to help communities build resilient, innovative wastewater infrastructure. In Washington, D.C., we’ve brought our expertise to many wastewater projects over the years: ??We provided engineering services for DC Water when it needed support for its Enhanced Nutrient Removal Facilities (ENRF) initiative. The project, which included new construction and upgrades to existing facilities, was part of an initiative to reduce the level of nitrogen from the cleansed wastewater discharged to the Potomac River. ??We served as the engineer of record and provided design and construction management services for the McMillan Reservoir Stormwater Storage Facility. This stormwater management project involved using two abandoned filtration tanks to mitigate flooding in historic neighborhoods. It received the 2015 Best Projects award in the Water/Environment category from Engineering News-Record. ??We also helped to redevelop aging facilities, such as providing construction and development management services on the McMillan Sand Filtration Site project. This former water purification center is now a 6.2-acre park and recreation center that still incorporates historic elements of the original buildings. Whether it’s improving efficiency, expanding capacity, or ensuring environmental compliance, we’re committed to shaping the systems that sustain communities for generations to come. This Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing the extraordinary women behind our business. First, we want to acknowledge our Founder and CEO, Deryl McKissack, who made the bold decision to start this firm more than 30 years ago, at a time when women in AEC leadership were all too rare. Today, women are driving McKissack & McKissack’s success at all levels. From our client sites to the back office, women aren’t a rarity at our firm — they’re integral to our success. They’re changing the faces of the cities where we work with their incredible skills, insights, and commitment to solving our clients’ problems. They enrich lives by making cities more resilient, community-oriented, and equitable. This month, and every month, we’re honored to celebrate the women of McKissack & McKissack, and we’re proud to be an example of what you can accomplish when you build an inclusive company. According to a recent report from Yardi Matrix, completions of affordable housing projects are expected to reach a peak this year. McKissack & McKissack works side-by-side with developers to bring these projects to life. For example, in the DC area, we worked with MRP Realty on The Solstice project at East Capitol, which is made up of 100% affordable housing units. We provided interior design services for the amenities, and residential units and commons finishes specifications. We created welcoming, ADA-compliant shared spaces including the lobby, management office, gym, mail and package room, and clubhouse. Jennifer Griffith, IIDA, LEED AP, McKissack & McKissack’s Director of Interiors, says it’s important that buildings like East Capitol are thoughtfully designed to be stylish and functional for residents. “For these families, this is the next step to get ahead socioeconomically. And so it has to feel good, be welcoming, and have a sense of quality to it. That’s why we place a lot of emphasis on hospitality, and providing? amenities that complement whatever they don't have in their units.” Through continued partnerships with top developers, we’re ensuring affordable housing includes the modern amenities that make a difference in residents’ lives. #affordablehousing #AEC #partnerships #developers

As we commemorate Women In Construction Week and International Women’s Day, we’re proud of how much AEC has progressed. If you need evidence of how far we’ve come in creating a more equitable industry, look no further than our contract with the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE). Several phenomenal women are at the helm of this project on the USVI side: Chaneel Callwood, Lead Architect for VIDE; Dr. Dionne Wells-Hedrington, Commissioner of the Board of Education; and Adrienne Williams-Octalien, Director of the USVI Office of Disaster Recovery. On the McKissack & McKissack side, 75% of the team running the contract are female, including Azuka Bartlett, Erika Gulick, Kathleen Fritz, Sonia Y. Torres, Vivian Ramirez, Cigdem Gurhan-Gunduzhan, and Sadaf Mohammadi. We’re working with VIDE to upgrade and build schools across the islands after several devastating storms. We’re delivering program and design management, procurement support, budgeting, and other services to improve the safety and resilience of the islands’ schools, which will also serve as shelters during storms. The skill and dedication of these women is helping the Virgin Islands reshape their education facilities for generations to come. ?? McKissack & McKissack is committed to being an inclusive workplace where women can thrive. From our Founder & CEO, Deryl McKissack, to the many women working in leadership, throughout our divisions, and on our board, we’re proud to support and uplift women in every aspect of our business. These individuals are living proof that, when we open doors for more women in construction, we strengthen the industry, address workforce shortages, and ensure we have the talent to take on major projects like this one. #WomenInConstruction #womenleaders #InternationalWomensDay

Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)’s new headquarters has been a successful project since its opening in 2022 at its new location in Washington, DC — and recently, it received another award! We proudly provided interior design services for the 227,000-square-foot renovation, ensuring that it helped to strengthen the transit authority’s culture. The new headquarters is a consolidation of WMATA’s 10 buildings across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Roughly 3,400 employees work in the updated facilities, helping to keep the Metro’s 250 million annual rides safe and on schedule. To help bring the newly combined teams together, our design choices aligned with WMATA’s cultural values of employee empowerment, collaboration, and innovation. A mix of hospitality amenities with open workstations, collaborative spaces, and private rooms gives employees the flexibility to work together or focus alone as needed. The design is complemented by environmental graphics, branding identity, and art installations inspired by D.C. Metro transportation system. Kudos to Jennifer Griffith, IIDA, LEED AP for her hard work in leading the interior scope of the project. We also want to recognize Jair Lynch, who served as the fee developer for this award-winning building. As a successful Black developer, he reminds us that new chapters in African American history are being written every day. We couldn't be happier with how it came together —? it’s the ideal workspace tailored to the needs of WMATA’s workforce. #interiordesign #AEC #BlackHistoryMonth

The Tuskegee Airmen are known for being the first Black pilots in the American armed forces. But did you know that their most important training base also made history by being built by Moses McKissack III and Calvin McKissack? McKissack & McKissack originates from the oldest minority-owned architecture and engineering firm in the nation. Its roots began before the Civil War when Moses McKissack — a slave in Tennessee — became a master builder, earned his freedom, and started a legacy that began with designing and building the 99th Pursuit Squadron Airbase in Tuskegee, Alabama — home of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Tuskegee Army Airfield was built in the early 1940s for $1.5 million dollars, which was a massive sum at the time. It was the largest federal contract awarded to an African American firm. The project was a major undertaking. It covered nearly 1,700 acres, and included four large intersecting paved runways, three large double hangars, barracks, and administrative buildings. Between November 1941 to June 1946, nearly 1,000 Black pilots trained at the airfield. They were aided by countless support staff, including mechanics, navigators, nurses, and cooks. Their heroism and skill were critical to breaking barriers and paving the way to desegregating the military. Next time you hear about the heroism of the Tuskegee Airmen, remember, the airfield where they trained holds history, too. #aec #blackhistorymonth #tuskegee
