Baseball is back! At McKissack & McKissack, we’re proud to have helped shape some of the stadiums where fans come together and legends are made. Take Nationals Park for instance, for which we provided program and construction management services. We coordinated with residents, businesses, local officials, and representatives of Major League Baseball (MLB) to execute this fast-track, design-build delivery, which opened at the start of the baseball season in 2008. With a construction timeline of just 23 months, it set a new record for major league ballpark builds. This 41,000-seat ballpark set a new standard for stadium sustainability and accessibility: ?Certified as the first LEED Silver stadium in the United States ?Raised the bar for accessibility, with wheelchair seating in nearly every section ?Awarded as the best large project recognizing “green leadership” by the U.S. Green Building Council, National Capital Region While Nationals Park was being built, the team needed somewhere to play, and that was RFK Memorial Stadium. But first, it needed to be modified to accommodate baseball games. We also provided program and construction management for this project, which included the following: ?Seating bowl modifications, clubhouse upgrades, and press box modernization ?Measures to enhance ADA compliance and life safety ?New natural turf system and upgrades to dugouts, bullpens, and batting tunnels ?Improved administrative offices We also helped modernize Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, by providing construction management services for several projects. We were initially retained to oversee construction of the Scout Lounge, and the scope later expanded to include the 35th Street development, a Chicago White Sox hydrotherapy facility, architectural translucent wall panel repair, exterior facade repairs, HVAC upgrades, and waterproofing. We’re excited to announce that we recently kicked off the next phase of our school modernizations in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This phase of the project includes the development and modernization of five schools and an administrative center on St. Thomas. As the Owner’s Representative, we’re advising the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) to ensure that their needs are met. Our Project Executive, Erika Gulick, and Senior Project Manager, Sonia Y. Torres recently met with USVI officials Chaneel Callwood, Adrienne Williams-Octalien, Commissioner Dr. Dionne Wells-Hedrington, and Governor Albert Bryan Jr. to kick-off these six projects.? They were joined by teams from Suffolk Construction and CBNA (Civil & Building North America Inc.), who are the design build contractors; architectural firms Zyscovich, Jaredian Design Group, and Design District; construction management firm Jacobs Engineering; and criteria architect, DLR Group. These school facilities are part of the first large education bundle through which the USVI is awarding six projects through one contract, enabling consistency as well as cost and time efficiencies to rebuild these schools. The Virgin Islands were devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, spurring local officials to undergo this major upgrade to the islands’ schools. These projects are essential to ensuring that the children and communities of USVI have resilient spaces to learn and gather for years to come. Kudos to Ricardo Nolasco, PSP, our Director of Scheduling, for leading a great session at Advancing Project Controls 2025. Ricardo shared a case study demonstrating the impact that owner responsiveness has on project cost and productivity. He also participated in a panel discussion alongside Sunita B., Cecilia Ashlie Lagergren, and David Hansmann, during which they shared their expertise on leading project control teams. Events like these are essential to driving progress in the AEC industry, and this year’s conference was fantastic. We’re glad to have participated in conversations about reducing risk by removing data silos and improving decision-making. From ensuring clean water to protecting ecosystems, wastewater facilities might not always be visible, but their impact is undeniable. McKissack & McKissack is proud to help communities build resilient, innovative wastewater infrastructure. In Washington, D.C., we’ve brought our expertise to many wastewater projects over the years: ??We provided engineering services for DC Water when it needed support for its Enhanced Nutrient Removal Facilities (ENRF) initiative. The project, which included new construction and upgrades to existing facilities, was part of an initiative to reduce the level of nitrogen from the cleansed wastewater discharged to the Potomac River. ??We served as the engineer of record and provided design and construction management services for the McMillan Reservoir Stormwater Storage Facility. This stormwater management project involved using two abandoned filtration tanks to mitigate flooding in historic neighborhoods. It received the 2015 Best Projects award in the Water/Environment category from Engineering News-Record. ??We also helped to redevelop aging facilities, such as providing construction and development management services on the McMillan Sand Filtration Site project. This former water purification center is now a 6.2-acre park and recreation center that still incorporates historic elements of the original buildings. According to a recent report from Yardi Matrix, completions of affordable housing projects are expected to reach a peak this year. McKissack & McKissack works side-by-side with developers to bring these projects to life. For example, in the DC area, we worked with MRP Realty on The Solstice project at East Capitol, which is made up of 100% affordable housing units. We provided interior design services for the amenities, and residential units and commons finishes specifications. We created welcoming, ADA-compliant shared spaces including the lobby, management office, gym, mail and package room, and clubhouse. Jennifer Griffith, IIDA, LEED AP, McKissack & McKissack’s Director of Interiors, says it’s important that buildings like East Capitol are thoughtfully designed to be stylish and functional for residents. “For these families, this is the next step to get ahead socioeconomically. And so it has to feel good, be welcoming, and have a sense of quality to it. As we commemorate Women In Construction Week and International Women’s Day, we’re proud of how much AEC has progressed. If you need evidence of how far we’ve come in creating a more equitable industry, look no further than our contract with the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE). Several phenomenal women are at the helm of this project on the USVI side: Chaneel Callwood, Lead Architect for VIDE; Dr. Dionne Wells-Hedrington, Commissioner of the Board of Education; and Adrienne Williams-Octalien, Director of the USVI Office of Disaster Recovery. On the McKissack & McKissack side, 75% of the team running the contract are female, including Azuka Bartlett, Erika Gulick, Kathleen Fritz, Sonia Y. Torres, Vivian Ramirez, Cigdem Gurhan-Gunduzhan, and Sadaf Mohammadi. We’re working with VIDE to upgrade and build schools across the islands after several devastating storms. We’re delivering program and design management, procurement support, budgeting, and other services to improve the safety and resilience of the islands’ schools, which will also serve as shelters during storms. The skill and dedication of these women is helping the Virgin Islands reshape their education facilities for generations to come. ??
