We are thankful for the collaborations with our consultants, clients, and community members that have allowed us to create architecture that engages, inspires, and belongs. More than ever, we are encouraged to see these collaborations driven by sustainability. As a signatory firm to the AIA 2030 Challenge and the AIA Materials Pledge, it is gratifying to celebrate two projects recognized last month with the 2024 Austin Green Awards The Montopolis Recreation and Community Center?is the centerpiece of its community, serving as a central gathering that includes multiple recreational facilities, including a boxing ring, a sport of great importance to the neighborhood's history. Certified LEEDv3 BD+C Gold and designated as a "resilience hub," the facility serves the community as a trusted site to be activated during times of need, such as a cooling/warming center during extreme weather events. As the first renovation on The University of Texas at Austin?campus to be certified LEEDv4 BD+C Platinum, Hogg Memorial Auditorium transforms this underutilized 90-year-old landmark building from a state of disrepair to once again serve as a lively hub for students and visitors. The design of the 1,000-seat venue reintroduces natural light, encourages communal gathering, expands access, and celebrates the architecture's historical significance by carefully balancing tradition with innovation. Since opening to the public, these two buildings have increased their impact as key places in the hearts of their community. Both buildings have renewed cherished community traditions, like the upcoming Montopolis Holiday Cheer event in early December, and inspired new traditions, like the Hogg Showcase which features faculty, staff, and student talent. We are thankful we had the opportunity to bring these places to life. We recently had the pleasure of welcoming Rachel Huang, our sixth annual McKinney York Architects Scholarship recipient! A fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture student at the The University of Texas at Austin, Rachel’s multicultural background and passion for creating impactful spaces inspire her commitment to enhancing public environments and exploring architecture’s role in civic and production systems. Her current studio project delves into circular food production systems integrated with urban marketplaces, deepening her exploration of innovative solutions for community spaces. At our meet-and-greet, Rachel shared her impressive portfolio, her plans for the future, and even treated the team to her homemade tiramisu! We’re excited to see the remarkable impact she’s sure to make in the world or architecture and our community. We’re honored to announce that the Austin Independent School District Sánchez Elementary School has been recognized as a Texas Society of Architects’ 2024 Design Award winner! This recognition highlights the collective effort that brought this vision to life, celebrating both the school’s rich heritage and its role in the rapidly evolving community it serves. We are grateful to the dedicated team that helped bring this project to life and to Austin Independent School District for entrusting us with this significant project. Michelle Rossomando, AIA, RID and Navvab Taylor from our team recently shared the story behind the design of Sánchez Elementary at the 2024 TxA Conference Design Awards Showcase. The story is one of proud community spirit and how the team designed the school with deep consideration of its heritage. Thank you to all who contributed to the project to make this achievement possible! Construction is well underway at this new student service center in Main Building at The University of Texas at Austin! Last week, we toured this site located within the iconic UT Tower with project manager Paul Holmes, AIA, and Project Principal Will Wood, AIA, who helped us understand the different aspects of this project as they showed us around this special space. The center streamlines access to university resources while fostering a supportive atmosphere, creating a calm and welcoming environment inspired by the historic 1930s reading room that originally occupied the space. P.S. A visit to the UT campus is incomplete without visiting our most loved projects: Texas One Stop (right across the hall from the new space and the award-winning Battle Hall!) #austinarchitecture #educationdesign #accessibledesign #sustainabledesign #adaptivereuse #preservation #constructionprogress #ontheboards #inspiringyoungleaders #studentcenteredspaces #creatingcommunity #inclusivedesign #communityengagement #womeninarchitecture #womenownedbusiness #40yearsofarchitecture #mckinneyyorkarchitects
