We are honored to announce that the Lathrop Homes Phase 1B has been selected as the Community Impact Project of the Year by the Greater Chicago Food Depository - Commercial Real Estate Awards! As part of Phase 1B, 74 new housing units were added to the site within two of the historic apartment buildings as part of the historic development led by Lathrop Community Partners and the Chicago Housing Authority. The phase was completed in partnership with Related Midwest, Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, Heartland Alliance, HED, JGMA, and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. Since 2007, MIA has been the Historic Preservation Architect for the phased redevelopment of the former Julia C. Lathrop Homes. Completed in 1938 by the PWA, the development sought to create an effective, modern, and truly American residential district that provided well-equipped units with access to well-scaled and well-orchestrated exterior spaces as a means to build healthy communities. Today, the Lathrop Homes remain one of the best-preserved examples of America’s first phase of public housing as well as of American urban and community planning in the interwar period. #historicpreservation #rehabilitation #housing #historicbuildings #historicarchitecture #masonryrestoration
