    Job Benefits in the GCC: What You Need to Know After 16 years in the Middle East, I’ve seen job benefits evolve, and not always in the ways you might expect. If you're negotiating or evaluating an offer in the GCC, here are six key areas to watch out for: 1?? Housing Allowances Once standard, an actual house is very rare unless you’re in a very senior corporate or government role. Most packages include housing as a percentage of your salary instead. 2?? Schooling Schooling allowances are increasingly uncommon, usually limited to top-level roles in government or corporates. Don’t expect this from agencies or consultancies. 3?? Flights Some companies roll flights into general allowances, while others still offer annual return tickets, often economy class and just for the individual, not the family. 4?? Medical Insurance Employee medical coverage is mandatory, but family coverage can be less common these days. Always check the details if you're relocating with dependents. 5?? Bonuses Agencies: Bonuses are often discretionary and limited unless you’re at the C-suite level. Consultancies/Corporates: Bonuses typically hover around 30% of the base salary, with rare cases tied to the gross package. 6?? Salary Structure & Gratuity Salary Splits: Expect around 60% as base salary, with the rest allocated to housing, transport, and other perks. Gratuity: Your end-of-service payout is tied to your base salary, so a higher base can pay off in the long run. Don’t just focus on the headline salary. Dive into the details of benefits like housing, flights, and medical insurance. These perks have shifted a lot in recent years, and understanding the full picture is key.
