We are delighted to announce that Leslie Vosshall, the Robin Chemers Neustein Professor at The Rockefeller University and Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has been awarded the 2025 Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience for her discovery of the neural mechanisms underlying mosquito host-seeking behavior. Vosshall will deliver her prize lecture, “Mosquitoes: neurobiology of the world’s most dangerous animal” at 4:00pm on May 9, 2025 at the McGovern Institute. The event is free and open to the public. https://lnkd.in/esG2k9zE

Our mission is to understand the brain and to apply that knowledge to help people with brain disorders.
关于我们
The McGovern Institute for Brain Research is a community of MIT neuroscientists committed to meeting two of the greatest challenges of modern science: understanding how the brain works and discovering new ways to prevent or treat brain disorders. Our scientists are pushing forward the frontiers of technology to understand how the brain learns, remembers, and perceives the world. We are discovering how these functions are disrupted by disease, and finding new approaches to treating disease. We are also this understanding of the brain to develop and improve artificial neural networks. The McGovern Institute was established in 2000 by technology entrepreneur Lore Harp McGovern and the late Patrick J. McGovern, former chairman of International Data Group (IDG). Our director is Robert Desimone, the Doris and Don Berkey Professor of Neuroscience at MIT and former head of intramural research at the National Institute of Mental Health. The McGovern Institute has grown from six founding faculty members to more than 20 distinguished investigators including one Nobel laureate and seven members of the National Academy of Sciences.

A vast search of natural diversity has led McGovern Investigator Feng Zhang to uncover an ancient RNA-guided system that could simplify the delivery of gene editing therapies. The programmable proteins (called TIGR) are compact, modular, and can be directed to modify DNA in human cells. https://lnkd.in/e9xtiB6a

What does brain research look like at MIT? To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the McGovern Institute, we’re giving you an exclusive peek into our research! The Gabrieli lab is investigating how ADHD and dyslexia impact reading skills in children. In this video, Hanna Thesken, a Technical Associate at MIT, and Alex Kaminsky, a Clinical Research Coordinator at Massachusetts General Hospital, take us behind the scenes of an actual?study. Stay tuned for more videos like these in the weeks and months to come! #McGovern25

We are beaming with pride - Mehrdad Jazayeri, a McGovern Investigator and professor of brain and cognitive sciences at MIT has been named an HHMI Investigator! After taking an unusual path neuroscience, Mehrdad quickly became an inspiring researcher and beloved mentor to many at MIT. As an HHMI Investigator, he will take advantage of a host of new technologies to explore how the brain enables rapid learning and flexible behavior—central aspects of intelligence that have been difficult to study using traditional neuroscience approaches. Congrats Professor Jazayeri!! https://lnkd.in/gTk85CTS

We are delighted to share the news that McGovern founding member Nancy Kanwisher has won the 2024 Kavli Prize in Neuroscience for her discovery of a specialized system within the brain to recognize faces. She shares the $1M award with UC Berkeley neurobiologist Doris Tsao and Rockefeller University neuroscientist Winrich Freiwald. Please join us in congratulating Professor Kanwisher for winning this prestigious award! https://lnkd.in/e7BmN83c

This is the remarkable story of our co-founder Lore Harp McGovern. "If you are a young founder today who finds themselves in her presence, you would do well to ask one of Silicon Valley’s last remaining original founders for her advice. If she’s prepared to offer it, then listen." https://lnkd.in/gUXBNwJF
