Susanne gave an introduction to the event and a personal account of the fall of the Berlin Wall. As Louisiana's Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany, Susanne collaborates closely with the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Houston to foster positive German-American relationships. In this role, she assists German citizens living in Louisiana with passport applications and lost passports, dual citizenship and naturalization applications, and notarizing transactions. A recent decision from the Eastern District of New York demonstrates that separate actions to collect unpaid rent and to evict a residential tenant could give rise to a claim for abusive collection practices in violation of the FDCPA, unless the debt-collector convincingly sets forth that an action in one forum would not have been enough to obtain all available relief. For the second time in five years, the Supreme Court will decide a case that arises out of the TCPA's ban on the sending of unsolicited faxes. This matter presents a unique challenge for the Supreme Court, which eviscerated Chevron deference in the Loper-Bright case last term. While some may expect the Court to take a similar approach to this case as it involves a federal agency’s interpretation of a statute, the Hobbs Act operates on a different wavelength. The FCC’s interpretation of the statute takes away power from the courts to review the FCC’s decision-making under the TCPA.
