At McGill, we proudly celebrate engineers who have shaped the built environment. This Black History Month, we honor Horace King, a pioneering Black civil engineer who designed and built bridges across the South in the 19th century. Born into slavery, King gained his freedom and became a renowned bridge builder, known for his innovative lattice truss designs, which made his structures stronger and longer-lasting. His engineering expertise helped create vital transportation links that supported growing communities.
