DHS Wants Your Social Media Handles... Buried in a new Federal Register notice, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is moving forward with a sweeping surveillance expansion: requiring social media identifiers from applicants for immigration benefits. The justification? "National security and public safety screening." The reality? A massive, vague, and unchecked data collection effort that will chill speech, target vulnerable communities, and introduce bias into already opaque vetting systems. ?? What this means: Immigration applicants will be forced to hand over social media handles across multiple platforms. DHS will use this to "verify identity" and screen for "inadmissibility," but the criteria remain unclear and ripe for abuse. A staggering 285,999 hours of public burden estimated—yet zero accountability on how this information will be stored, used, or shared. This isn’t just about immigrants. The precedent is set. Today, it’s visa applicants. Tomorrow, who’s next? ?? We need to push back. Privacy, due process, and free expression must not become collateral damage in over-broad government surveillance programs.
