?? Turning Sap into Syrup: A Sweet Lesson at MCHS! ?? Students in the ProStart 2 culinary class at McDonald County High School took their learning outside recently for a unique hands-on experience—tapping maple trees right on the MCHS campus to make syrup! With guidance from culinary instructor Marie Strader and Missouri Conservation agent Adam Strader, students learned every step of the syrup-making process: ?? Tapping the trees: Using drills, they carefully drilled holes, inserted taps, and set up lines to collect sap in 5-gallon jugs. ?? Understanding ingredients: They gained valuable knowledge about where ingredients come from and how raw sap is transformed into syrup. This activity taught students about sustainable food practices, ingredient sourcing, and how to use fresh, natural ingredients in recipes—a key element of culinary arts. ?? A Special Note: The trees they tapped hold a unique piece of school history. They were planted by the father of current Principal Angie Brewer when he was a science teacher shortly after the school opened more than 50 years ago! ?? When enough sap is collected, the students will take it back to the culinary lab, boil the sap to create sweet, golden syrup, and then serve it over pancakes! ?? Stay tuned for more tasty updates from this class! #MCR1 #HandsOnLearning #MapleSyrup #EveryChildEveryDay
