March is #NationalNutritionMonth, which is a great time to learn about dietary patterns and diet quality. Dietary patterns refer to the types of foods and drinks a person consumes regularly, including how often and in what combinations. Diet quality measures how healthy these eating habits are, especially in preventing diseases like Alzheimer’s. A high-quality diet includes nutrient-rich foods with minimal added sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats. Examples of healthy eating plans include the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the Alternate Mediterranean Diet. We hope these #BrainAwarenessWeek graphics have helped our followers to better understand the research we conduct at McCance. We close out the week with a breakdown of “Diet & Supplementation.”??To learn more about the McCance Center, visit: https://lnkd.in/e2sq8qQY What does “Diet & Supplementation” mean? Diet is the type of food and beverages a person regularly consumes, while dietary supplementation involves taking products such as vitamins, minerals, or other substances to fill gaps in the diet or enhance overall health. Nutrient biomarkers can reflect the nutrients that we consume in our diet. Gene Bowman

Today, as part of #BrainAwarenessWeek, we are defining the word “microbiome,” which is sometimes referenced in our research. To learn more about our work, visit:?https://lnkd.in/e2sq8qQY What is a microbiome? A?microbiome?is a collection of tiny organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes that live in and on the human body. These microbes play an important role in digestion, immune function, and overall health. The most common example is the gut microbiome, which consists of trillions of bacteria distributed among thousands of different bacterial strains.?

In honor of #BrainAwarenessWeek we are breaking down words commonly used in our research at the McCance Center. Today, we focus on organoids. What is an organoid? An organoid is an artificially grown mass of cells or tissue that resembles a particular organ and replicates its key functions. Organoids are created from active stem cells. Organoids can be used to recreate a disease process, e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, by introducing disease gene mutations and then tracking the pathology. These models can greatly accelerate drug discovery.

In a new study, researchers from the McCance Center for Brain Health at MGH found 16 new #Alzheimer's disease susceptibility genes. The researchers conducted a multi-ancestry, whole genome sequencing association study of Alzheimer’s disease, expanding the study of the disease in underrepresented groups.??Participants were from multiple public databases and nearly half were of non-European ancestry. “We were pleasantly surprised to have made this discovery by expanding genetic analyses beyond populations of European ancestry to more diverse populations,” said co-senior author?Rudolph Tanzi, PhD.
