WO Larsen Partially Rusticated Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen. Like the Italians and the Irish, the Danes had their own, distinct approach to rustication. Though I’m not sure of its precise origins, the type of fine, micro-rustication seen here was brought to prominence by Peter Brakner, through his own approach to high-grade handmade pipes. WO Larsen’s rustic line blended smooth and micro-rusticated finishes to great effect, often using the latter for “fumed” rims or, in this instance, the base of the pipe, affording better grip and a nice hand-feel. The condition is fair. A good amount of rim darkening, but nothing to stop the pipe being a fine smoker. ? Stanwell DM 1988 10.AR Sandblasted Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. It has been a tradition for many years now for Stanwell to provide pipes for the many slow-smoking competitions that take place across Denmark. This is why some Stanwells can be found with initials such as “SM,” “RM,” or, as with this one, “DM.” The “M” stands for “mesterskab,” which is Danish for something like “championship”; intuitively, the “D” on this one stands for?“Danmarks.” So, it was made for the Danish national slow smoking competition. It will have been made for the 1988 event and, judging by the “10.?r” (“10th year”), this will have been a special one for the Danmarks Mesterskab’s 10 year anniversary. The pipe is a Danish-production Stanwell, which at that time took place at its Borup factory. The condition is fair. Rim darkening and handling marks. ? Peterson Pipe of the Year 2023, Sandblasted X160, P-Lip, Unsmoked (345/1100) Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin. For their 2023 Pipe of the Year – an annual tradition since 1997 – Peterson fans were treated to a limited reissue of a very special shape, the X160. The shape had originally debuted at the turn of the 20th century, during Peterson’s Patent Era; but, by the time of this reissue, it had been out of production for what seems to have been around a hundred years. The 2023 POY, therefore, brought back a truly classic shape. It is a swan-neck billiard, one that might almost be compared to Dunhill’s ‘LC’ shape, but one also with a very round, egg-like bowl, as was the style in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This one is dressed in a crisp, near-black sandblast and, like the other 2023 POYs, also features a sterling silver military mount and a vulcanite P-lip stem. Only 1100 of these pipes were made, with this one being number 345. This pipe is also completely unsmoked, having come to us from a collector through our trade-in program. It has an original bowl coating, though one that has been slightly over-applied at the top of the inside lip. So as to avoid confusion over whether the pipe has been smoked, we wanted to mention this now, as it has not been. The pipe also comes with its original presentation box, sleeve, and brochure. ? Sasieni 4 Dot Walnut Smooth Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked Along with names like Barling, Charatan, and Dunhill Sasieni holds a special place in the history of English smoking pipes – one near to its very beginnings. So the story goes, Sasieni himself worked for Dunhill during its early days. But eventually he left Dunhill, having his own ideas about how pipes should be made, and founded Sasieni. This was 1919, and Sasieni has been the closest thing to a household name in English pipes ever since. I’m not sure I can remember when Sasieni pipes were last made, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of unsmoked 4 Dots land on my desk. This particular 4 Dot is a classic bent billiard, dressed in the make’s signature Walnut finish. This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Preben Holm Partially Sandblasted Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked Though he would tragically pass away at the age of 42, Preben Holm was one of the pioneering figures in the ‘Danish design’ movement in 20th century pipe-making – a movement that still dominates the high-grade pipe scene. By hand-shaping his pipes on a belt sander, Holm was able to make the most of the patterns of grain hidden within briar, creating spectacular works of pipe art that looked just as good as they smoked. Owing to Holm’s untimely passing, his pipes are even more highly sought after than they were during his lifetime. It is remarkably uncommon to come across an unsmoked Preben Holm. Something about them just begs to be filled with a bowl of one’s favorite blend. This one looks to be an early piece, and shows off Holm’s proclivity for and talent with mixed finishes. The pipe juxtaposes crisp ring grain and smooth straight grain sections, separated by a fluting of the bowl’s sides. The pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. ? Rattrays Marlin 4 Smooth Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy. Though the Rattray’s brand has changed hands several times over the last century, it has maintained a close connection to the figure of the marlin. Marlin Flake has been a popular blend for a lot of Rattray’s history, and there have similarly been Marlin line pipes to go with it. This one is a classic brandy shape, with a light, red-brown stain. Hurricane Standard 130 Wind Cap Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates Like Alfred Dunhill’s Windshield, or various silver-capped briars, the Hurricane was one of the many 20th century inventions intended to help smokers enjoy their pipes in less than favorable weather. Many of these inventions originated in Britain, which makes sense for a nation infamously beleaguered by gales and rainfall. The “Hurricane” wind cap system was one of these inventions, and though its origins are unclear, it was, at one time or another, associated with Roy Talent, Nutt Products (side note: a fantastic name for oddball inventions), and Orlik. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. La Biota Smooth Dublin w/ Horn Handmade Briar Pipe, New A graduate of Italy’s prestigious Academia della Pipa, Michele Sottocasa has been making pipes for over a decade under the la Biota name. Prior to becoming a pipe-maker, Sottocasa trained and worked as a designer and art director, and la Biota pipes continue this drive towards a distinct aesthetic vision. The name, ‘la Biota,’ originally derives from ecology, and symbolizes the deep connection between humans and nature – a connection well represented by the hand-made tobacco pipe. After having the pleasure of linking up with Michele again at this year’s Las Vegas International Pipe Show, and eventually managed to cajole him into letting me take some of the pipes he’d brought back for my customers. This one seemed like a new direction compared to the style of many la Biota pipes, but I could absolutely not resist it. It’s a compact—almost nosewarmer length—Dublin, with a little bit of a Danish streak to it. The flame grain on it is spectacular, and the bird’s-eye on its rim is tightly knit and only broken by a kiss of bare plateau. As is common for la Biota pipes, it includes a ferrule carved from Italian deer horn, as well as a hand cut cumberland stem. ?
