  • MBSD Meerschaum & J. Mouton “Premier Deluxe” (3/4) Block Meerschaum Pipe, New ? I’ve always said that, of all the pipes we sell, I’m proudest of our meerschaum pipes. Enlisting the finest carvers from Türkiye’s meerschaum powerhouse Eski?ehir, and working solely with high-grade meerschaum blocks, MBSD Meerschaum has been even more successful than even I—captivated as I was with my initial “pipe dream”—had imagined. But in the years since there has been a project in the back of my mind that I have not had the chance to realize: a collaboration between “East” and “West,” so to speak. While Türkiye has the world’s best meerschaum carvers, the world’s best stem cutters are found in a more global community, one whose primary medium is not meerschaum, but briar. This is the essence of the MBSD Meerschaum Premier: combining high-grade, Turkish meerschaum bowls with equally high-grade, hand-cut ebonite stems. For this very limited run, the latter have been cut and fitted by none other than J. Mouton, an American artisan and one of the most respected and sought-after pipe makers working today. In total, four MBSD Meerschaum Premiers have been made, one for each year since MBSD Meerschaum was first conceived. As with each of the MBSD Meerschaum & J. Mouton collaborations, this is one of our best-selling models; in this instance, a swan neck billiard in the vein of the old Dunhill LC shapes, lightly rusticated to mimic the craggy sandblasts of early briars. As a Premier Deluxe variant, however, it features both our patented, extra durable Briar-Mortise, and a hand cut German ebonite stem, tailor made by J. Mouton in Gueydan, Louisiana. This pipe comes with a shorter, spare acrylic stem for situations where such might be more desirable. ? Details: Length: 6″ / 152.4mm Bowl Width: 0.77 / 19.55mm Bowl Depth: 1.85″ / 46.99mm Weight: 1.6oz / 50g? ???????? • MBSD Meerschaum Silver Reverse Calabash Floral Brandy Block Meerschaum Pipe ? The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our new series of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts. There are few things in life better than a good brandy—and, yes, the pipe shape is pretty nice, too. I joke, of course. I love the brandy shape: whether it’s a good old Peterson 68 or B11, or a more modern S. Bang, or Balleby, or what have you, it’s a shape that fits and fills one’s palm like a glove and is as comforting between one’s fingers as its snifter namesake. This one adds some quintessential Turkish artistry in the form of a floral, hand-carved finish, along with a sterling army mount and a reverse calabash for an even cooler, drier experience. ? • Dunhill 1994 Shell Briar 4903 Nosewarmer Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates ? To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy. The “4903” is by no means a common shape in Dunhill’s current roster, though it is not exactly a new one either. Such pipes appeared in Dunhill’s catalogs as early as the 1930s, marketed to be used “for sport” (presumably of the more leisurely, slow-paced variety), with modern versions, like this one, remaining relatively unchanged. Typically under 4 inches in length they are what pipe smokers have come to affectionately know as a “nosewarmer,” or perhaps a “moustache burner” if you’re so inclined. The condition is very good. Some rim darkening, minor finish fading. ? Details: Length: 3.6″ / 91.4mm Bowl Width: 0.85 / 21.59mm Bowl Depth: 1.59″ / 40.38mm Weight: 0.9oz / 26g? ???????? • W.O. Larsen Sandblasted Walrus (Sven Knudsen Design) Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked ? WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen. Of all the names given to pipe shapes, from apple to Zulu, the “Walrus” is certainly among the strangest. Yet one when looks at such a pipe, this appellation is very much intuitive. First designed by Sven Knudsen in at least the early 1960s, the design would appear in Knudsen’s work with Pibe-Dan (later Pipe Dan), in his Dantonian project with his younger brother Teddy Knudsen, and, of course, in the pipes of W.O. Larsen. The elder Knudsen was one of the first of the great Danish artisans to have their work sold by W.O. Larsen and, once the Larsen workshop was established, he would be its first foreman, so it is only natural that his Walrus shapes would find a place there. This one is a little different to Knudsen’s original design. The first Walrus was a sitter, like this one, and had protrusions at the base of the bowl, also like this one. But those protrusions were more like flaps, invoking the flippers of its marine mammalian namesake, whereas this one’s are more like small briar baubles. While Knudsen’s Walrus shapes are among the least common surviving designs from his time, this is far from the first of this particular variation I’ve come across. In fact, I have a pet theory about the scarcity of the former and the existence of the latter: while the original Walrus’s “flippers” were more “flipper-like,” they were also thin and quite brittle, especially for the feet of a sitter shape. As a result, I’ve seen many a Walrus with a broken limb or two. “Bauble” renditions like this one, on the other hand, are far more structurally sound, without losing the design’s signature look. This one happens to be completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, and its original, leather sleeve. ? Details: Length: 6.2″ / 157.4mm Bowl Width: 0.76 / 19.30mm Bowl Depth: 1.71″ / 43.43mm Weight: 1.8oz / 52g? ???????? • 19th c. CPF Best Make w/ Amber Stem Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked ? The Colossus Pipe Factory, known by its initials C.P.F., is a make that is – as of yet – still a little shrouded in mystery. What is known is that the make was established in 1851?and that it was owned by Kaufman Bros & Bondy (later of Kaywoodie fame) by at least 1898. It is also understood that the make disappeared, and was therefore likely discontinued, at some point between the mid- to late-1910s, with the exact year still under debate. Unraveling the history of these CPF pipes we’ve had in recently has been a blast. As I mentioned in a previous listing, I was able to find out – thanks to a small, ancient piece of paper tucked into one of the CPF pipes’ bowls – that the make was founded in 1851. This, coupled with the more extensive work done by Steve Laug and his interlocutors on the Reborn Pipes blog, allowed me to narrow down a relatively specific period in time when these pipes were made, starting 1851 and ending at some point between 1884 and 1898. After the 1884-1898 window, Kaufman Bros & Bondy absorbed CPF and the KBB emblem was added to CPF pipes, which neither this nor those previous ones show any trace of. This is, therefore, a guaranteed 19th century pipe, and certainly not a low-end one either. From its amber stem, to its engraved silver collar, to its fitted, alligator leather clam-shell case, this CPF will have been intended for special occasions, such as gifts and awards. This pipe is completely unsmoked. In fact, it still has its guarantee inside the bowl. There are some very small, superficial nicks at the base of the stem, along with what appear to be some spots in the overall finish, which isn’t uncommon for pipes of this vintage. I’ve reduced the price a little in any case. As with other pipes of this vintage we’ve sold, I would advise handling this one with slightly more care than the average briar. Amber is a little more brittle than the ebonite or acrylic used for modern pipe stems, and the tenon on this one looks like it may be bone, which is more brittle than Delrin and the other tenon materials used today. ? • Morgan BlackJack 30 Sandblasted Bulldog Briar Pipe, New Debuting all the way back in 2014, the BlackJack is one of the great success stories of American pipe-making in the 21st century. Conceived by California’s Chris Morgan (who would also go on to create the wildly successful Bones series), the Blackjack was conceived as a way to apply the techniques and design principles that Morgan had established as a high-grade, artisan pipe-maker to something more affordable. With the combined expertise of Morgan and of the established Italian pipe factories charged with manufacturing, the BlackJack has been a mainstay among pipe smokers ever since. ?
