    "Language matters. So does validating people’s wildest aspirations." There is a lot of political wisdom woven into this piece by Diana Lind. I saw a recent poll by Gallup that said that the number one thing followers wanted from leaders was "hope." That struck me because for years my own formula for leadership has been love, hope and mission. The language we use does matter - it has to be clean, crisp, and clear-eyed. And it has to give folks hope that if they stick together and stick with us, things will get better.

    It's not in the headlines at the moment (after all the zone is flooded) but the nation's water crisis has been building for decades and will soon be back at the top of the agenda for state and local leaders. This article from Anna Singer and Joe Kane of The Brookings Institution offers a broad scope look at the issue and provides examples for local leaders to consider as they get ready for when it again demands their attention. And, of course, the discussion of what Congress or the EPA might do to help is over shadowed by the uncertainty now present in Washington. "Ultimately, the country’s water affordability challenge transcends any single political moment—and its scale and severity are only growing over time. The escalating costs to operate and maintain existing infrastructure and make needed upgrades are putting enormous financial strain on local utilities."?

    One of my big lessons as mayor was how long it took to get things done. I frequently complained about how trying to get policies adopted and implemented in ways that actually impacted community conditions was like trying to run in a lake of cold molasses. In her newsletter today, Diana Lind points out that the glacial pace at which cities move is a major drag on their finances. As we know, time is money!
