Congratulations to Haley O., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing, who was nominated by a colleague and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story. "I had to have emergency surgery while 2.5 hours from home on a family vacation. Naturally, since I was away from home, I was nervous. To have care from nurses like Haley took all the concerns away. Haley was eager to interact with me and my wife and explain what was going to happen throughout the night. She would get answers to my questions and not leave me with the answer ‘I don't know.’ She made an extra phone call to the pharmacy to ensure one of my medications wasn't in conflict with another one I was on. And when I shared that I could use some extra sleep during the night, she appropriately managed my care to provide a larger gap between her visits. By the end of our stay, my wife and I felt like we had made a friend who cared about us both medically and as humans." Congratulations to Alanna A., a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who was nominated by a colleague and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story. "Alanna was caring for an individual who had been in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) long term. She was caring for the patient when his stability took a turn and he became gravely ill rapidly. Alanna kept using her critical thinking nonstop about ways to help stabilize him again all the while also attempting to figure out what made the turn happen in the first place. As the patient grew more and more ill, she was right there in the room nonstop being a patient advocate if I ever saw one. She called the family multiple times and never left the patient’s room due to her constant administration of different treatments. Alanna continued with her hard work while we waited for the family to arrive even when we thought the patient was not going to be able to hold on. She put on his favorite type of music, held his hand and told him he was going to be OK. When the family arrived her compassion and caring nature took over for the family as she comforted them. Alanna was compassionate, caring and present with this patient and his family during her time with them. Alanna was a top-notch example of a patient advocate on this day. If someone ever finds themselves in a position where they might not make it in time for their loved one, I hope Alanna is on the other side of the phone for them because they should know that their loved one will be taken care of and reassured through the whole process." Congratulations to Joey L., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, who was nominated by a patient’s loved one and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story. "For what was a scary week for my family, Joey was a breath of fresh air to us. He was comic relief. He was a counselor. He was a caregiver. He was quick with a joke and a hug. He was someone who took the time to get to know my husband, children and I. He treated each of us with the utmost respect and care. He and my husband had a bonded love of making meats in a smoker. He went above and beyond taking care of my family that week. Sadly, a few days after his release, my husband had to be re-admitted to the hospital. When we knew that there was nothing else that could be done for him, I requested that his last days on this earth be spent with the staff he was familiar with. I knew that the care that would be given to each of us would be filled with kindness and compassion because we got to know many of the staff the previous week. As my children and I walked down the corridor, leading my husband to the final hospital room that he would stay in, it was Joey who immediately came to our side, hugged us, and cried as we tried to grasp what our reality was becoming. During late night/early morning walks, it was Joey who we would chat with at the nurse's station to just clear our minds and give us a small moment of "normal" in a time when nothing was normal. To say that he is an outstanding nurse seems like an understatement. Mayo Clinic Health System is blessed to have such an amazing person taking care of their patients. As a family, we consider Joey to be one of us. Although it is almost five months since my husband passed away, we still think of Joey with great respect because of how he helped all of us during the saddest time of our lives." "Paige oozes compassionate care and empathy towards the patients she works with. A patient had gone through a traumatic sexual assault experience. While this type of situation is not one that Paige frequently works with, she was adamant about making sure this patient felt cared for. She has reached out to colleagues and external resources to ensure she understands how to help this patient in the best way possible." Congratulations to Abby L., a licensed practical nurse in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who was nominated by a colleague and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story. "Abby had a patient call her in the middle of a mental health crisis. Abby spent time on the phone with this patient to work through the crisis and was able to get this patient scheduled with her provider that day to discuss her mental health. However, the patient did not show up for the appointment. Abby went above and beyond and attempted to reach out to the patient because she knew this was not like the patient. Abby contacted the patient's emergency contact and also called the police to perform a welfare check. The emergency contact was very grateful that Abby had called a welfare check. Abby did not end it there. She called the emergency contact the next morning to check in and see if any further support was needed. Abby truly cares for her patients and their loved ones. She is a true example of a caring, above and beyond nurse." Mayo Clinic Health System is among over 5,000 healthcare organizations worldwide committed to the DAISY Award program. Two of our Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service team members, Steven and Laura, were recently honored with an Excellence in EMS nomination for their extraordinary compassion and dedication. When faced with a heart-wrenching situation, Steven and Laura worked to reunite a patient with his wife during her final moments. The patient, reluctant to leave his wife's side at a skilled nursing facility, was transported to the emergency department. Steven and Laura stayed with the patient until he was treated and discharged, ensuring the couple could be together in their last hours. Their incredible efforts profoundly impacted the patient's life, embodying the true spirit of care and empathy. We are immensely proud of Steven and Laura for providing the outstanding service and dedication that our patients expect from Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service.
