  • ?? Discover the Apache pine (Pinus engelmannii) at the May Arboretum! Near Galaxy Grove, the Apache pine stands out with its towering height and impressively long needles, some reaching up to 16 inches. Native to the Sierra Madre Occidental and parts of the southwestern U.S., this unique tree thrives in rugged landscapes. Its thick branches and glossy brown cones make it easy to spot. The name honors the Apache lands where it grows and the botanist George Engelmann, who first documented it in 1848. Some even confuse it with the ponderosa pine, but it's a distinct species with its own story to tell.

  • Discover the beauty of blooming Pussy Willow at ?????????? ?????????? ???????????????? this spring! This hidden gem in the heart of the May Arboretum is bursting with life as Pussy Willows begin to bloom for the season. These soft, silvery catkins may be small, but they play a huge role in the ecosystem, offering a vital source of pollen for native bees emerging before most flowers arrive. With 57 species of birds calling this wetland home, it’s a haven for wildlife. The black willows and cottonwoods provide shade and shelter, while cattails and riparian plants create a thriving habitat for amphibians, reptiles, and pollinators. Pussy Willows add to this rich landscape, forming dense thickets that give birds a perfect nesting spot and butterflies and other pollinators a safe place to feed and grow. Wetlands are nature’s filter and flood control, but they’re also living, breathing ecosystems that support an incredible variety of species. As spring arrives, Evans Creek Wetlands is waking up. ?????? ????????! Willows are generally dioecious, meaning that males and females are separate plants. Flowers appear as catkins (noted to resemble furry cat feet) and are produced in late winter to early spring before foliage emerges.
