Learning SQL and confused by terms like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and T-SQL? Don't be. 5 things to know to make this easier... 1) There is one universal standard for SQL, maintained by standardizing bodies ANSI and IOS, updated every 3-5 years. 2) Different vendors (like MSFT, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc) then publish extended versions of that universal standard. 3) The result is various 'flavors' of SQL (MySQL, T-SQL, etc) as the vendors add bells and whistles to compete. 4) The various flavors are much more similar than they are different. The core functionality is the same throughout. 5) MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you master one flavor of SQL, your skills will easily transfer to the other flavors. I promise. Take John's experience as an example... Learned T-SQL using Microsoft SQL Server at a big company. Went to a startup, used MySQL with phpMyAdmin. Another startup, MySQL using Sequel Pro. Another startup, PostgreSQL using Metabase. Now at Maven Analytics, using MySQL w/ Workbench. We use MySQL w/ Workbench for our online SQL training courses. Workbench is great, and it's free :) The skills easily transfer every time. There are minor differences. No biggie. So, which flavor of SQL is 'best'? Learning Excel? Discovering the VLOOKUP function was at one point a game-changer for so many. But then it became less important. Here's why... Excel introduced XLOOKUP! XLOOKUP is Excel’s newest lookup function which solves some of the most common limitations of VLOOKUP: 1) It can return data from the right or left (!) of the lookup column. 2) It can look from the top-down or from the bottom-up (!). 3) It includes an “if-not-found” argument (No IFERROR needed!). 4) You can use wildcards for partial matching. 5) You don’t need to sort your data for approximate matching, and it can return values less than or equal to, or greater than or equal to (!) the lookup value.
