Are you trying to break into a data analyst career and learning one of these TOP 5 business intelligence tools? 1. Power BI 2. Tableau 3. Qlik 4. Domo 5. Excel Why? Why are you spending time learning these tools? Hopefully you're answer is something like, "There a lot of information out there, and I'm not quite sure where to start, so I'm trying to better understand what I'm interested in." Well, John has a great article that's all about a data analyst career path. He's got a ton of tips and insights to offer new and budding that are looking to break into a career in analytics like: "Just start learning about data. Learn on the job and outside of work. Learn as much as you can. Build valuable skills. Pay attention to the types of things you like doing and the things you don't like doing." I think this may be one of my favorite parts of the article - pay attention to the types of things you don't like doing. Often times people get hung up on figuring out "the perfect fit" when you can, often times, arrive at that place more easily by figuring out what isn't a good fit. Take a spin through the article, below... FULL ARTICLE: --> https://bit.ly/2RFaPwr #data #analytics #careers #businessintelligence

Learning Excel? The LAMBDA function is a game-changer… In a nutshell, the LAMBDA function lets you create custom formulas that you can use across your workbook (without VBA or macros!!) The syntax is simple: =LAMBA( parameter, [parameter], [...], calculation ) Parameters are inputs (like variables) for your formula The calculation, which must be the last argument, uses those parameters and evaluates them inside a formula that you define. For example: =LAMDA(x,y,x+y) In this case, “x” and “y” are the parameters and “x+y” is the calculation, which adds them together. However, you’ll notice that “x” and “y” don't have any values assigned. There are 2 ways to do this: 1. Explicitly within the formula: =LAMBDA(x,y,x+y)(A1,A2) -- this will sum the values of A1 and A2 2. Using name manager to create a new function Click CTRL+F3 and create a new name, like “XplusY” In the “Refers to” section, paste the function: =LAMDA(x,y,x+y) Press OK and call this function just like any other: =XplusY(A1,A2) -- this will sum the values of A1 and A2 This is an example meant to showcase how LAMBDA works, but the possibilities are endless! Do you have any preferred use cases for LAMBDA? Let us know in the comments! #excel #data #analytics #businessintelligence

Use Excel for data analysis? Wildcards are a great tool for working with text data. Here’s a new use case I discovered while helping out a friend… He had a product lookup table with alphanumerical SKUs (i.e. small_shirt-123), and wanted to see how many times each SKU appeared in a sales table. Easy… COUNTIF( sales_range, sku ), right? The problem was that the SKUs in the sales table were concatenated with other text strings (i.e. 210819&small_shirt-123.large_shirt-456&store-y), so he wasn’t getting any matches. Here’s where the wildcards come in :) Wildcards are special characters used for “fuzzy” text matching. --> The asterisk (*) represents zero or more characters --> The question mark (?) represents a single character For example: “*en*” will return “enrique”, “bend”, and “cement”, but “?en?” will only return “bend”. Therefore, wrapping a text string in asterisks (*) asks if that text string is contained within another, which gave us our solution: =COUNTIF( sales_range, “*” & sku & “*” ) If that SKU is contained within any cell of the sales_range, then it will count it. Problem solved! Have you encountered a similar scenario? #mavenquicktips #excel #data #analytics #businessintelligence #careers
