Summer School: State of the Sky Mattress Factory welcomes applications for Summer School: State of the Sky, an interdisciplinary arts-centered educational program to be held within the State of the Sky exhibition at Mattress Factory’s, 516 Sampsonia Way building. The program will encompass six bi-weekly seminars, twice weekly access to the exhibition’s solar darkroom, and a series of public events. Summer School will explore how documents housed within archives, libraries, and museums—repositories of knowledge and power—can be used to reimagine dominant narratives. Through the creative translation of documents–newspapers, photographs, data, and other archival materials, participants will explore ways to un-archive and recirculate marginalized, contested and unknown histories. The seminars will be guided by visual artists, poets, filmmakers, and anthropologists, providing a space to connect with diverse research methodologies, engage in creative experimentation, and foster critical discussions about cultural knowledge and memory. The seminar has a fee of $100.00 to supply photographic materials for participant use in the solar darkroom.

Yesterday, we celebrated the birthday of Mattress Factory's founder -- Barbara Luderowski! ?? Yesterday would have marked her 95th birthday. Barbara founded Mattress Factory in 1977 as a space by artists, for artists. Almost 50 years later, we're still committed to her original mission in all that we do. __ "People ask me, 'What was your vision?' Truthfully, I had no vision. Many 'visionaries' just dream up a rationale for what they did after somebody asks them that puzzling question. I wanted an intellectual community. When I look back on it, I'd say that was my desire: a community - eating, drinking, and doing the work. And it's worked out far better than I could ever have thought." - Barbara Luderowski Barbara deCoux Luderowski (1930 – 2018) was an artist, sculptor, designer, and pioneering leader of Pittsburgh’s burgeoning arts scene. With grit, tenacity, stubbornness, and passion, she created the Mattress Factory and influenced the course of the art world for generations. ??
