In the late 1870s, Matthews was in business marking products such as cargo and cattle. Fast forward a century, and we were still at it—only this time, we weren’t marking livestock; we were helping to mark and track the modern world. By the 1960s, supermarkets were booming, and checkout lines were painfully slow as cashiers manually entered prices. The grocery industry needed a fix, and in 1973, the Universal Product Code (UPC) system was adopted. But in the pre-dawn era of digitization, barcodes weren’t just printed—they had to be crafted with precision. That’s where Matthews International stepped in. After years of research and development, we became a pioneer in producing UPC film masters, ensuring barcodes were flawlessly accurate, readable, and ready for the revolution. That revolution? A retail transformation. UPCs paved the way for automated checkout, inventory tracking, e-commerce, and global supply chains—a game-changer still shaping business today.
