Garage Volunteers Needed ?????? Working in the garage feels like a team sport,” said Lawson (first photo). “Everyone has a different role, but we build on each other’s strengths and skills. For example, if something is too heavy for a volunteer to lift, they just need to call for help and a teammate will be by their side.” Lawson is taking a gap year between college and law school and started volunteering with us this summer. She is now a part-time garage coordinator managing our garage volunteers. She finds the work rewarding because every week, she gets to see her “team” and appreciates being checked in on. Marcia (second photo) also started as a volunteer in our garage and now is a part-time garage trainer. She works along side our new volunteers and trains them on the roles in the garage. “I like working outside and being on the front lines. The work keeps us busy and the shift flies by,” she said. One of our core values is “partnership”. We engage with the community to empower our clients to overcome their current crisis and be better prepared for tomorrow. It was a pleasure to invite Joe Hamby, Director of Education and Advocacy at Roof Above, and Matthews resident, over for coffee this morning with our social work team. This morning, we talked about the importance of compassionate kinship and not just “loving on” one another in our work, but really prizing each other. As an avid reader and passionate advocate for ending homelessness in Charlotte, Joe shared with us some of his favorite literature on his nightstand… “When We Walk By,” Kevin Adler and Donald Burnes and “Poverty in America,” by Matthew Desmond. Thank you, Joe, for your presence this morning with us.

Over 80 volunteers along with community businesses, churches and individual donors helped to lighten the financial burdens of 103 families that will bring joy to 260 children this holiday season. Thank you to the team at Greystar that did a phenomenal job in helping to breakdown our client shopping event. Wednesday’s event benefited 275 kids and teens this season, helping to lighten the financial burden of 100 families. Greystar helped us to sort the left-over items and gift them to our community partners, Bright Blessings, C.O.S. Kids, Turning Point and the Matthews Police Department who will also spread joy to the families they serve in our community. Happy Holidays!?
