Honoring our treaties at the annual tribute to the Governor of Virginia! ?? The event beautifully showcased our heritage and unity as we came together as one community in this 347 year old tradition. Our tribal leaders and members proudly displayed Mattaponi culture with vibrant traditional dress and ceremonial music and dance. Chief Mark T. Falling Star Custalow led the tribe in song, reminding us of the profound strength rooted in our same identity. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to unity, knowing that this togetherness paves the way for prosperity and a brighter future for the Mattaponi Indian Tribe and Reservation. #OneMattaponiTribe #StrongerTogether #Heritage #NativeAmericans #VirginiaIndian #VAIndian #PeopleOfTheRiver #Mattaponi #Indigenous

Virginia is home to one of the richest Native American histories in the United States, with 11 recognized tribes, including the Mattaponi Indian Tribe and Reservation. The name "Virginia" itself is derived from Queen Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen," but long before European settlers arrived the Mattaponi people referred to the land as Tsenacommacah, the land was inhabited by numerous Indigenous peoples who had rich cultures and complex societies. Virginia’s Native American history is ancient but still thrives today as tribes across the state celebrate their heritage, preserve their languages, and contribute to the culture of the region. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #VirginiaNativeHistory #MattaponiTribe #OneMattaponiTribe #StrongerTogether #PeopleOfTheRiver #MattaponiTribe #History #Virginia #Indigenous #Mattaponi #VAIndians #VirginiaIndians
