My Experience in the M3 Maths Modelling Competition Over the weekend, myself, Tharul Wanni Arachchige, Ethan Zhou, Rohan Michhiana, and Alex Summerscale participated in Siam's MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (run by MathWorks). The competition was centered around developing and justifying mathematical models to represent a real life situation, which in this case was based around Environmental Factors for one of two chosen cities. This involved the utilisation of provided data, research into several areas, certain mathematical methods, and in some cases the use of programming or other technology to aid with the modelling process. We had to model three different situations and produce a 20 page writeup in a 14-Hour period. As a team, we were quite new to the concept of Mathematical Modelling, so the main goal of participating in the competition was to explore this part of mathematics whilst also learning in the process. The competition itself ended up being very enjoyable, with our team producing all 3 models and a somewhat rushed writeup at the end of the window. We now await the results, but given this was a first experience, we aren't expecting too much. The main takeaway from this? If you come across an opportunity to try something new, take it. You will most likely end up learning something new, and can also find it fun, making memories with others that you will remember for a lifetime.
