You can integrate a MathRack (rekenrek) into your teaching practice by incorporating it into math lessons, small group activities, math centers, or even individual practice sessions. Start with simple activities and gradually increase the complexity as students become more familiar with using the tool. ALL curriculums encompass automaticity of facts through understanding and the MathRack (rekenrek) is the most efficient mathematical tool to use. #automaticity #math #earlyeducation #earlyed

MathRack believes in connecting text to the math experience to enhance children’s understanding of mathematizing their world. We have created this list of books suggested by the Early Math Collaborative resources as a quick guide for you to use with your instruction. - https://bit.ly/4bw7nr6 #education #study #teacher #mathminds #mathmanipulative #mathfluency

Automaticity Tidbit #2—Where Does “It” Begin - https://bit.ly/3R7c7M0 ( PRE-Prerequisites) Fact: All students must learn to think mathematically and they must think mathematically to learn. (Adding It UP) Fact: To Mathematize Children’s World they need to begin seeing it mathematically. Fact: Infants are sensitive to quantity and can make good quantity comparisons. (subitizing) Brains are hard wired to numbers. The quantity of a small collection can be intuitively perceived without counting. (Big Ideas of Early Mathematics) #mathematics #math #earlyed #sunday

MathRack Activity Cards Purpose: To use the MathRack in conjunction with early number sense ‘Activities’ to develop understanding of number sense through Quick Images, Show Me activities, Number Strings, and Situational Problem Solving. How to use the MathRack: The start position for the MathRack is ‘white to right’. All the beads to the right. The beads ‘in play’ are moved to the left. This example shows 7 + 8 QUICK IMAGES Rationale: Children will recognize and name how many objects are in a small group without counting. (subitizing) The different colors and embedded five structure of the MathRack helps children build mental images of numbers. The activity emphasizes cardinality (how many), spatial relationships, and overall number sense. Directions: Briefly display an arrangement of beads and then cover it up to give children time to think about it. Then ask them to tell a partner how many they saw and why they think that number is correct. Show the images long enough to allow children to see the beads and groups of five but not long enough for them to count beads individually. This time constraint encourages children who are counting each bead to shift to strategies that are more efficient. Differentiation: The cards consist of images less than 5, then 3- 6 on one row of the MathRack, then 7-9 on two rows, and then place value of numbers 20-100. These are just examples of what can be shown during quick images, you can do the same routine but create different quick images using your MathRack. #study #teacher #naperville #math #earlyeducation

"I work with K-5 students and provide math intervention. I am amazed at how helpful the Rekenreks are. I debated about making my own. I’ve seen ways to make them with pipe cleaners and beads. I also saw other versions for sale on Amazon. But this came highly recommended by Build Math Minds, a math learning community to which I belong. When I received my set of 7 Rekenreks, I was impressed with how well made they are. I’m considering buying the large one for teachers or ones with more rows for my older students. Well worth the investment for this Rekenrek version. Oh, and did I mention there was even a little baggie of Hershey kisses inside the box when my package was delivered? What a sweet gesture (pun intended) from this company!" #math #thursday #tbt #fyp #picoftheday #chicago
