?? BIG NEWS ?? Last week, Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas introduced #SB626 to transform California's perinatal mental health care system. This critical legislation will ensure that all birthing people receive the mental health care they need and deserve. This bill addresses a major public health crisis: The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation, and perinatal depression is the leading cause, with 1 in 5 parents experiencing these challenges and only 15% receiving treatment. This crisis disproportionately impacts Black women, people of color, low-income, and marginalized families due to barriers accessing culturally competent care. SB 626 will save lives, reduce costs, and support families throughout California, especially in underserved communities. A huge thank you to Lola Smallwood-Cuevas for her leadership and commitment to this cause! ?? #PerinatalMentalHealth #MaternalMentalHealth @bw4wla @maternalmentalhealthnow @sagebiotech @psi_ca_chapter @policycentermmh

We know that even when screenings are conducted, birthing people might not feel comfortable sharing their symptoms of depression or anxiety. That’s why we train healthcare providers to conduct screenings with care and empathy. ? Now, VCU School of Nursing researchers are taking things further by updating the EPDS screening tool with trauma-informed language.?If you’re a healthcare provider, you can be part of this groundbreaking effort to improve care for birthing people by implementing the tool and helping validate it.
