?? Thank you Debbie Abrams Kaplan and CQ Researcher; CQ Global Researcher, for including Material Change founder, Eve Blossom in your recent report focused on private equity’s role in the economy! Such a comprehensive report. Make sure to subscribe to read the full story below ?? https://bit.ly/4gFJ7Wn #PrivateEquity #Equity #VC #investing https://lnkd.in/gAHWaW59

I’m proud to share my single biggest project of 2024 – a 12,000+ word report on private equity’s role in the economy, written for CQ Researcher; CQ Global Researcher, published today. I’m sharing a link at the bottom of this post, but it’s only accessible with a subscription. A few takeaways: ? Private equity is not necessarily good or bad. It is nuanced. ? The number of private equity-backed companies has risen to 11,300 in 2023, from 4,900 companies in 2007. At the same time, the number of publicly held companies has dramatically shrunk in recent decades to about 4,300. (Implication: less corporate transparency, less regulation, less government monitoring) ? Private equity is growing in many industries, including healthcare. The demise of Steward Health Care (the largest for-profit hospital system) show the problems that private equity can have in patient safety, healthcare access and costs. Real estate lease-backs free up money but can cost PE-backed companies in the long run. ? Public pension funds are huge investors in private equity. ? Private equity firms were involved in 65% of the largest U.S. corporate bankruptcies in the first half of 2024. ? Private lending (private credit) is taking over for traditional bank loans, making businesses more reliant on this type of funding. ? Private equity-backed companies employ 12 million people in the U.S. ? Legislation around private equity issues is probably best handled at the state level initially, creating models for future national legislation. This would not have been possible without the expertise and generosity of the following individuals. Alex Mammen at Heritage Growth Partners LLC, Brendan Ballou, Doug Tatum, Drew Maloney at American Investment Council (AIC), Eileen Applebaum at CEPR - Centre for Economic Policy Research, Eve Blossom at Material Change Institute, Irwin Kishner at Herrick, Feinstein LLP, Jane Zhu MD at Oregon Health & Science University, Jeff Hooke, Laura Katz Olson at Lehigh University, LeadingAge, Mariana Trujillo at Reason Foundation and Matthew Parr and Chris Noble, Esq. at Private Equity Stakeholder Project https://bit.ly/4gFJ7Wn
