Real world perspective from startup companies right here in our own backyard. #startups #globalimpact #thisiskitsap #tariffs #manufacturing
Cedrus began in 2016, with the goal of producing high quality, long-lasting sporting goods domestically. We leverage engineering principles and manufacturing processes from more advanced industries to compete with brands who outsource from overseas. It’s not easy, in fact it’s the hardest thing I have ever done. These tariffs are making it even harder, and despite my best efforts, I see no positive impacts to my business. Foiling is a boutique, but fast growing market. While initially focusing on a mast manufactured from carbon fiber, we introduced a domestically produced aluminum product in 2021 smack in the middle of the COVID-19 supply chain crisis. This served us and our customers very well, with performance at a price point more suitable for the beginner or intermediate foiler (the majority of the market). During our redesign a couple years ago, we began working with an aluminum extruder outside of Vancouver, Canada for a key component of our new hydrofoil mast. We did this for a number of reasons: -They are bigger than our previous extruder, with more engineering and manufacturing resources available to support us. -They had much shorter lead-times than our previous extruder; time is money. -They were much cheaper, in part due to currency, but also economies of scale and efficiency. -They are physically closer to the Seattle area, and actually offer free freight. This saves us a lot of time and money. -Thanks to USMCA (previously NAFTA), we didn’t worry about tariffs or duties -Extruders in the US are focused on more expensive markets, like aerospace, and less wiling to work on consumer goods. It was very difficult to find other extruders capable and willing to work with us. There’s a lot of rhetoric about these tariffs being a good thing for domestic manufacturing, but we’re just not seeing anything positive. In fact, it’s all negative, at least for our business: -First off, we don’t even know what our new cost is. The uncertainty makes it really hard to plan a business and price a product. -If tariffs are leveraged, we will need to raise our prices. This will impact our domestic and international sales. -The high $USD has already impacted our international sales. The US can’t be a manufacturing powerhouse if our dollar is so strong the world can’t afford our products. -We can’t just “transition our supply chain.” Any politician who offers 30 days to move a supply chain clearly has no idea what it takes to make physical products. -the rest of the market, who continues to manufacture primarily in China, has a lower tariff rate than us. I’m posting this in an effort to share some facts. I’m trying to avoid opinions, emotions, and political statements. We will continue to do the right thing for our business, our customers, our community, and the planet, which is to manufacture as proximally local as possible. Hopefully the uncertainty ends soon and we can mend the relationship with our friendly neighbor!

As we ramp up to announce the 2025 cohort, we're reflecting on the incredible transformations from past Micro Business Accelerator participants. Here’s a sneak peek at some of their take aways after experiencing it themselves: "I have new ways of approaching my operations and thinking about my business and what I hope to accomplish." "I feel that I have overcome a few obstacles in my personal journey. My cancer diagnosis a few years ago put me in a position where I lost my ability to work in kitchens. Along with sobriety and a focus on my mental and physical health, I have been able to regain my confidence. This program really helped me take that next step into making my business a reality." "I have much better financial tracking than I did before, because of some of the modeling done in class."
